One rule for MPs? 11:18pm on 19 Aug 2009 Rich people who can afford expensive solicitors get treated differently from the rest of us under the law. So what's news?
Vexatious and irresponsible questions 11:42am on 14 Jul 2009 I'd be concerned if there's not a clear legal definition of the term "vexatious" in this context. If not, it would seem this is an easy way for the government to get out of revealing anything they don't feel like telling us. A bit like concerns over policemen having the right to pull over anybody they think is "suspicious".

If not carefully monitored it could be open to all sorts of abuse. Difficult question from the public? Call it "vexatious" and put a permanent block on anybody ever getting to access the details.
The family album 11:48am on 08 Jul 2009 Nice little article, though I think you're trying a bit hard when you say "all photographs are in some ways about death".

I think a lot of photos are about sharing happiness - showing friends and families places we've visited, showing distant relatives how the little ones are growing up because people can't just hop on planes from Australia every week, this kind of thing seems to me to be about sharing joy rather than reminding each other of death. I guess it depends on your personal philosophy of life!
Been hounded by the BBC for licence money? 6:16pm on 31 Mar 2009 I moved into my present place about a year ago, I have no TV. Soon got a letter from TV licencing saying "you don't have a tv licence, please get one, or tell us if you don't have a tv".

I think the percentage of homes in the UK with a tv is something above 90% so it's fair enough that they send reminders to all houses. My first reaction was to contact the TV licencing people to let them know I hadn't got a tv but then I thought - hang on - they've sent me quite an abrupt letter, and I am unhappy on two accounts: first, the assumption of guilty until proven innocent, and second, that I have to spend my money (phone call or letter and stamp) and time, to prove my innocence. So I decided not to respond as a protest, and have since been the recipient of more and more strident letters. Why should I have to spend my money and time proving that I don't have a TV?

The TV licencing would have saved itself money on posting these letters to me if they'd simply sent a polite first letter and offered freepost and free phone options to contact them to let them know I didn't have a tv.

It does seem rather ironic to be receiving these rude 'guilty until proved innocent' letters at the same time as Radio 4 is running a series of programmes about "Britishness" with the great and the good suggesting that to be British is to be polite, accept the belief of innocent until proven guilty, and similar such values not held by the BBC's licencing people...
Green's arrest draws parallels 4:42pm on 28 Nov 2008 I'm sure the police knew that this would draw huge media coverage, so they would have been careful to act within the law, they knew they'd take criticism.

What upsets me the most is the way that MPs across all parties are behaving. My impression is that they consider themselves above the law and that being arrested is only for 'little people' - not for the nobility such as themselves.

Their loudest complaint seems to be that this is "against tradition". Terrifying - they are more concerned that us peasants aren't showing them enough due deference than a criminal investigation is properly pursued.
