Hatton continues to be one of the lads 6:01pm on 26 Nov 2008 I'm sick of people on these forums having a go at authors of these Blogs such as Ben Dirs and complaining it's a waste of taxpayer money. It may be a waste to you but to many other's it's a light hearted read - it doesn't have to be serious analysis to be "worth" taxpayer money. And at the end of the day not everyone will be satisified by everything - I'm sure there are things funded through taxation that JobyJak likes but that others don't. So get over it and stop churning out that stock line.

As far as Hatton is concerned - maybe it is a bit of a false demeanour - but who cares? He is a very good boxer and can do what he likes - perhaps it's just his boxing character in the same way Mayweather always came across as super arrogant but in actaul fact wasn't.

And finally with reference to his eating and drinking - the only problem with that is that it could impact on his longevity - he is under no obligation no to do it to be a role model for kids. What complete rubbish - he is hardly going out assaulting people - he is unwinding after months of training.

There seriosuly are some right plonkers on these forums. Keep up the good work Ben - I think people are just jealous because you got to go to Vegas with "taxpayer money"! Oh the injustice!

it's so true - we need to take a look at our own game before so vehemently criticising others - why is it when Gerrard or Owen goes down all too easily in the area it barely gets a mention but when it's Drogba or C Ron, it's another foreigner bringing the game into disrepute. The fact is everyone's at it, English or not.

It wasn't an own goal - Butcher has even said that he would love to claim it as an own goal to take it away from Maradona but unfortunately he can't because he didn't touch it - it was Maradona who managed to get a nick on it to put it past Shilton.

And Vickers has no obligation to write a moral article - it's called a blog - and gives his opinion, moral or immoral.
Coming to Maradona's defence 5:09pm on 03 Nov 2008 Brilliant article - one mistake though. Just because Maradona was cheated against this does not mean he wasn't a cheat - it just means his cheating was (arguably) more justifiable.

This is a question for debate and I am of the opinion that it was justifiable given the virtual assaults he was subject to throughout his career as you highlighted.
Liu Xiang out 4:28pm on 18 Aug 2008 The guy is a world class hurdler and on his day it would have been a fantastic contest between him and Robles. No one would have wanted to take gold more - in front of a home crowd - than him. For people to not be able to sympathise with his predicament is frankly disgusting - a man, clearly distraught and in pain, having to go out there for whatever reason, and attempt to race.

At the end of the day he was right to quit as this is a potentially career-threatening injury and he has to consider his career and life before anything else - after all it's not his fault the Chinese public have put so much pressure on him and put him on so high a pedastal.

Here's to a speedy recovery Liu and let's hope that in 2012 he can show us the truly great athlete he is and reclaim his Olympic crown!

That 200m race in Atlanta has to be my favourite sporting moment of all time but i was equally happy when you finally broke the 400m record as it would have been a travesty if you did not obtain that!

My questions to you are:

I know that once you ran a 42.9 split in a 4 x 400 relay, but what was your fastest ever time in training for 200 and 400? Were they perhaps better than your world records?

And what sort of gym work did you do? was it few reps on heavy weights to build up the explosivenss or would that bulked you up too much for the 400?

P.S. I think your records will stay for some time yet - i can see Bolt running 19.5 maybe and Wariner seems to have faded after running 43.45 last season.

I'm not sure the painter/sculptor analogy is correct either. Here you're talking about a one off physical good whose value lies in its very "physical" uniqueness. I agree that in this case once the good is sold, the owner should receive no further gains.

However with music we are talking about an intangible object whose value lies in the non-physical joy we derive from it. Physically each song is worth very little or nothing. Therfore copies need to be made and it the sum of the value of each copy that gives it a similar aggregate worth to the one off piece of the painter/scupltor.

Furthermore if the music was downloaded legally and then sold on, then i agree the artist isn't entitled to a share of the second sale (i.e. value added) as no party as acted in an illegal manner. The point is that one or more of the transfer of ownership rights are in fact illegal.

i do however like your proposal with regards to length of time of copyright. Here we would have a similar patenting procedure to drugs in the pharmaceutical industry where after a period, the pharma company is no longe protected by its patent and the formula has to be released.

There are still issues with this though. As you mentioned, how do we decide what is an appropriate period for the song to be copyrighted, before being freely available to all? And secondly, the reason pharmas have to do that is for a moral obligation to help the sick - i.e. make drugs more cheaply available for the benefit of mankind. However whether or not the same argument can be made for music is at best tenous and at worst ridiculous. If a musician makes a song, he is under no obligation to make it freely available at ANY time. For instance we don't expect clothing shops to suddenly give away everything for free after that particular season has ended do we?

the point 193 was making was that you would be in someone's else garden not the fact you are using the sun.

The sun analogy does not work with reference to downloads because it isn't a public good. By taking an illegal download you won't harm anyone else's enjoyment but that doesn't mean it is a public good. It is a private good - namely the artist's - for his/her distribution/sale.
