Climate change debate: 'calm, civilised, informative' 5:27pm on 24 Nov 2009 Andrew I greatly admire your critical judgement on most issues but I feel on this point you are badly wrong as you where during your time as editor at the Times when you held the line that the link between HIV and AIDS was in doubt.

Ignoring the link between HIV and AIDS has cost 100'000s of lives, ignoring the link between CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and global temperature will likely cost 1'000'000s of lives.

Scientific theories are usually right or wrong. In an effort to create balance I can imagine the BBC 500 years ago reporting that the earth maybe flat or maybe round.

The Earth is round and CO2 traps energy in the earths atmosphere.

Well done for laying into MPs, nothing they say will make me think its anything less than a total disgrace. I just hope they aren't able to delay and draw out the issue for months hoping people forget, get tired of it and resign into apathy.

p.s. I didn't think we still had MPs like John Mann, why isn't he prime minister?!?!

I was a bit suspicious about the doctors viewpoint, he seemed to cherry pick evidence. He mentioned evidence that lowering prices increases consumption this doesn't automatically mean that upping prices decreases consumption, it's more complicated than that.

He also mentioned the Sheffield models showed it would have a positive effect. It is impossible to model a 3 body collision with exact results. How on earth do they expect to model the habits of millions of people with any accuracy

I think the main problems are social and cultural. The culture problems are emphasized by large powerful drinks and club companies. They have undercut and shut down smaller competition with a independent alternative culture. This means that if you want to go for a drink in most towns and cities you end up in a soulless wetherspoons and after that move onto liquid/tiger tiger/jumpin jacks where the (very successful) business plan is to sell you as many drinks as possible (its the only way to enjoy yourself in those places).

I think increasing supermarket prices and cutting prices in independent pubs/clubs might have a good effect. It would encourage people to go out and socialize rather than drinking at home. It would bring communities together and people would look out for each other.

I think we should legalise all drugs aswell. Otherwise if alcohols expensive people will do pills. Addiction and over consumption needs a fair combined approach.
