Shaun of the Dread 1:58pm on 16 Nov 2009 The match was no big deal... the Brown/Foster/penalty-fluff will be forgotten by everyone (bar Capello), and when Bridge sits down today and looks at his stats, he'll spot that the unused subs ran more on the touchline, than he did on the pitch... apart from that, we looked OK bearing in mind our team was without so many regulars: it would be interesting to know how many "first choice" Brazilians weren't playing though...
What we can learn from Rooney, Dan Rooney 04:48am on 12 Nov 2009 so with only 6% of the population represented in the sport by 23% of the players, has anyone bothered to work out what percentage of the premier leagues wage bill (players and coaching staff) is paid out to blacks? If this is above the 6% as i suspect, should we not be looking at why other ethnic groups are less well represented in the sport as a whole?

There is no need to look at the situation; the point that black applicants for managerial positions fail resulting in a disproportionately low number may well be, (as a number of posters have said) due to preconceptions about their chances of success at interview...
It backs up what i said earlier; Black or not, if one of the four applicants doesnt believe he'll get the job, then he won't!

I don't look as Ashley Cole, David James or Rio ferdinand as "Black"; I look at them as English footballers; but now follow the figures, if you must...
in a squad of 40, 23% (about ten) are "black"
say, 10% of the squad (four including one "black") go take their coaching certificates, and the best applicant gets a post in the football league... theres a 75% chance he WONT be "black"... nothing racist, purely stats
but that doesn't mean that 25% (23%) of the managers are going to be "black"; it means that only 25% of the applicants were "black"
each and every manager's position only has a 23% possibility of being "black"

The fact that a chairman isn't employing a "black" manager doesn't make them racist; it just means they felt that one of the other 75% of the applicants was better...
couple this with the fact that many of these "black" players are foreign and leave the UK at the end of their playing career... there is nothing "sinister" about the figures.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with him, in fact I think he's an outstanding player, it's just referees seem to always get Fletch's challenges wrong; at least if Scholesy's in midfield taking chunks out of the opposition, then the fouls and free-kicks are justified!

you've bottled it again Robbo; using a 500 year old Christian fundamentalist movement, instead of daring to use present day Islamic fundamentalism as your metaphor. Every religion has fundamentalists, and the "this is more relevant to my readers" argument really doesn't work this time.

Sorry mate, 100% wrong. The Bloodgate is more like the Hand of God, cheating, but no diving. If you knew your stuff you'd know that Quins were actually sending players away to toughen up, Williams included.
The sort of reaction the Illunga (i think) showed to having his chest tocuhed is the reason rugby players in general will always look down on footballers.

EVERY rugby fan i know is acutely embarrassed about bloodgate! It's the best way to stop the "sissy footballers" pub argument dead in it's tracks.
The amazing thing is just how few people (outside of sports fans) actually know who was involved... or even which type of rugby; union or league! it really has wrecked rugby's image as a whole.
With Football, the coverage of major pros diving/cheating is given so much media coverage, that you can't fail to know exactly who is cheating, and who they play for!
Have Hull had their Phil? 3:50pm on 02 Nov 2009 I get the feeling that last monday, a meeting of the referees asociation looked at everything that was missed in the liverpool v utd game, and decided to punish anyone who did the same offence this weekend...
I think with any team coming up to the Premier League, who shows they can do something different will always be able to stay up for a second season (Giovanni's strikes, Delap's throw-ins, Stephen Hunt's ability to damned near kill top-flight goalies) but Phil's days have been numbered since the day Rafa, SAF, Arsene et all, sat down in front of the video with their respective players and asked "OK what's the danger? how will we beat them?
