Why cars are greener than buses (maybe) 1:31pm on 20 Nov 2009 The only real way to cut CO2 output is to radically alter the start and finish times of different business, schools, uni's colleges etc. We all start our working day at about the same time (or the vast majority of us do), so if we altered half of our start times to the middle of the day and alternated in a kind of shift pattern then public transport would be less crowded at current peak times. This alteration of working times would enable the public transport networks to cut the number of journeys during current peak times and increase them during the middle of the day.

It's simple logic; if we really are serious about cutting our CO2 output levels then it's an option that must be looked at. We could also look at moving goods around during the night time hours, with less traffic on the roads at these times large lorries can travel faster and with less stopping and starting due to traffic buildups they would not waste anywhere near as much connectic energy. We might need to make this a more attractive option to the companies that delivery our goods and the chaps that drive them about, but again it's a worth while route to a reduction.

I have relatives in their late 50's with no children who have said on many occassions that the earths warming will not affect them so why should they give a toss. And here in lie's the problem; if we gear all the restrictions as monetarty values, then the rich simply buy their way around them. Essentially most humans are selfish and want "their own space". I don't care too much for the train in the morning, why? Well it's too full, it's too hot, it smells etc, why should I spend ex amount on a ticket when I can't even sit down? The selfish arguments or the "it's my right" arguments will always be with us, but unless we take action now, I'm afraid it will be too late.

Radical thoughts and radical solutions must be required and altering our way of working must be the key. We don't all need to start at 9:00 and finish at 5:00. Again though, it must be done in an even handed way. Key workers like the police, Dr's, fire service etc all work shift patterns so why not bankers, shop workers, teachers???????????
When should children start school? 11:39am on 16 Oct 2009 I would like to say to the Wenger years, you live in a totaly different enviroment to me. I am within what would be classed as an inner city area and many kids here will not have the same backup as you gave to your kids and I would suspect that most of the kids in your village got the same.

The life style in a lot of area is different, so please don't try to say one size fits all. I would bet that you had much more time to spend with your kids, I on the other hand work a 60 hour week and although I'd love to, never get the chance to sit and listen to my daughter read.

It's not just about age it's about enviroment and opportunities, some have better structures in place than other.
When should children start school? 11:32am on 16 Oct 2009 My Daughter went to school about six weeks after she turned five, she'd been at a private nursery since being six months old and had had some schooling in the form of French lessons and basic reading at the nursery. My daughter was probably ready for school, she' very bright and has passed key stage reading for children who are a year older than she is and she loves school.

On the other hand my son is 2 and has never been to a nursery, my wife's wage would have just about covered the fees but we'd have had to put our daughter to pre and after care. The knock on effect is that my son is not as advanced at the same age. Some will argue that boys are slower anyway, but I can see now that at five he won't be ready, moreover he will only be five one week before he starts school.

I would favour the swiss system where kids start later but once they do start the school day is different. The kids there go to School on a Saturday morning and in general it's much more intensive once they do go.
Tories bash the rich 1:48pm on 06 Oct 2009 It makes no difference what Georgie say's we all know what he means. The rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer. Half of the stuff he says he wants to implement will be thrown out of court by any decent judge. It's all poppycock.

Only yesterday the Tories were banging on about getting folk who are sick back to work, just where all these jobs are coming form nobody knows. Never mind though, George, David and chums will all be OK they all have friends that have friends that will make sure they and their families have a nice high paid job.

I am one of milions who has worked hard Six days a week 10 hours a day) for 20 years, have a degree and yet I still can't dream of earning half of the salary of the average Tory banker. It's all a load of hot air, Gerogie will not implement this, he will cut spending on Health and Education and then in few year sthe voters will see the long waiting lists and the schools failing down and vote Labour who will then spend to put it right.
Mandelson fights back 11:09am on 12 Aug 2009 I don't want to see a mudslinging contest from now unitl next June, but the Tories are getting away with murder. They have no policy ideas whatsoever, other than the same old guff from the 80's & 90's. To be fair the Labour party don't appear to be any better and the Lib Dems? Well it's still a wasted vote.

I am glad though to see the Labour party fighting back against the public school boys that seem to monopolise the Tory front bench. They have and always will look after their own. I have little doubt they will win the next election, and with a massive majority. However, with or without a credit crunch, they will cut spending to all front line services, apart from those that benefit them and their rich backers and friends.
Ancelotti strikes first blow 10:06am on 10 Aug 2009 As per usual, the "lets have a pop at SAF's age mob are out in force, Mat_Bakus, makes all sort of incorrect points.

I listen to the 606 phone in last night and I was laughing my head off. United have been written off already.

We have barmpots like Mat saying SAF is showing his age and then know nothings on 606 last night. Did nobody watch the game? The first half saw Chelsea ripped apart, so much for the missing Ronaldo. The second half they clearly got their act together and were the much better team. But there is the nub. United lost one excellent player and one good sub over the summer, what did chelsea loose? Now correct me if I'm wrong, had yesterdays game been a league game it would have been a point each. It wasn't it was a friendly and they won on pens, but the fact remains that they have lost no players and yet over 90 mins they still could not beat us. Moreover, I best CB was out and it is unlikely that Nani will start in favour of Valencia.

As a United fan, I am more than happy with what I saw yesterday, the rest should be worried. Chelsea had a full, fit squad which has been togther for nearly three years, OK they have a new manager which takes time to bed in, but make no bones about it, United looked good yesterday. Bring ti on.
Secrets of the fixture computer 11:29am on 16 Jun 2009 Mind blowing amount of info. I thought they just put all the team in a computer and hey presto.
BBC News and disabled audiences 3:12pm on 19 Feb 2009 I think it's great that they show give the information verbally rather than the lazy it's on the screen.

My Mum finds it hard to see some info and it's correct to say this is providing info. Yes we are a bit too PC now, but this is not within that grouping
Fixing the Jag 5:00pm on 18 Dec 2008 It's a disgrace that Tata can put big money in to an F1 team and yet want the British tax payers to ensure they can get loans.

When will we ever learn in this country that we can't sell off everything to oversea's investors? The next itme to go will be the post office.

Everything we have sold over the years has ended up making massive profits for rich investors and yet each year they want more from smaller work forces. Take a note from the french; they own their major car companies, train companies etc and the french own half of our enery production at the same time we are seeing record price increases, they have seen very little.

Tell tat where to stick it and refuse them any money until they put the same amount in to jag as they have in to F1

The time of year when good old Phil starts to show his anti United colours.

Anyway, just have a quick look at the new Chelsea boos; how long is it since he was in a day to day managers job? This is where he will need all the help he can get from his back room team. I agree that it would be folly to simply dismiss Chelsea, far from it they will be in the top two again, but Fergie has seen it all before and I think the new man at the Bridge will not be ready for what is about to come.
