Hard-core smokers 11:06pm on 28 Jul 2009 Yet another asthma sufferer concurs that going to a club or pub has been made immeasurably more pleasurable since the law came in.

It is interesting this idea of a hard core of smokers - I have noticed that my smoking friends appear to be more combatative when the issue of giving up is raised. The ban seems to have created a clear distinction between those who smoke and those who would smoke but cant be bothered with all the standing in the rain etc; and the true smokers have embraced their identity - proud to be a smoker.
The people's plinth 11:49pm on 05 Mar 2009 I think it's a great idea - I voted for it in the 4th plinth competition. It's clever, beautifully simple, and utterly democratic. I shall sign up and if I get on, I will read out all the complaints about how pointless it is.

Firstly, in the public sector, by reducing the number of council houses available and then on top of that not prioritising for council accomodation the children of those council house dwellers dislocation has occured.

Secondly, in the private sector, allowing house prices to soar has prevented many young people from living in the same area as their parents.

This has left many rural areas hollow shells of communities - hardly any original inhabitants still live there, while cities are full of young people trying to find somewhere affordable to live.

Of course there is a huge value judgement being exercised here - I left my village to go to university 30 years ago and have enjoyed the anonymity of various cities ever since !

Why oh why do you and your ilk continue to read Robert Peston's blog - and post comments to it - when your knowledge is apparently so superior to his?

If all he is doing is parroting the Treasury why don't you engage with something more challenging?

Meanwhile in order to find considered comment as I try to keep up with this extremely complicated story, I have to wade through your streams of invective which would be put to better use at Hyde Park Corner - with all the other nutters.

This article makes the point that the only difference between Obama and all the others was that they weren't too keen to draw attention to it.

This all points up the fact that each one of us is an extraordinarily complex mixture of couplings that have taken place over many thousands of years. The term 'race' is utterly meaningless.
Banks should be boring 11:08pm on 13 Oct 2008 With the number of people now saying 'well of course it was obvious this was going to happen' which seems quite reasonable - I never understood how house prices just kept on soaring, but why would I when it suited me - it occurs to me to ask where the leaders of the G8 recruited their risk managers from, because this whole thing has clearly caught the whole of the leaders of the 'free world' on the hop. Did no one at Davos suggest that it might be a good idea to have a rescue plan in place just in case this happened? Were all the bankers and politicians so blinded by their power and luxury that the possiblity of this didnt occur to them? What craven idiots we are, to think that these people know how to manage the economy. I must say this whole thing has done wonders for my self esteem as a manager - but then nobody could possibly manage any worse than that lot.
