UK calls for EU muscle 1:03pm on 28 Oct 2009 Here's something to consider - when was the last time you saw a truly Euro-sceptic UK government since we joined? All governments support the project when they're in power, and oppose it when they're not [well, except for the Lib Dems].

Why?

Because the media in this country has conspired to spread anti-EU sentiment through half-truths, exagerations and outright lies, in order to sell papers to people too stupid or with too little time to discover otherwise.

Because once in power governments know that the EU is the only vehicle that provides relevancy in an increasingly 'continentalised' world. A world dominated by America, China and India will not see Britain as a peer, but it will see Europe as such.
Is all publicity good publicity? 11:29am on 21 Oct 2009 We get the government we deserve. If a million people in this country are so ignorant of history, of the dangers of the extremism that parties like the BNP represent... then whose fault but the English is it if they shape our politics?

I'm young; nationalism isn't something that I care about. The last generation can waste their energy on that, while I enjoy the freedom of ad hoc identity groups.
I'm educated; I've got quite a good job, it's stable and career progression isn't stunted. I worked hard studying, improving myself to be in this position.

People like me are immune to the BNP. It's the uneducated, the underclass of people in this country who just didn't apply themselves that will fall victim to them. Is it ironic that the people who shout loudest about their "Britishness" are usually the ones who have done little or nothing to improve Britain?
Microsoft: There's a buzz about Bing 09:09am on 01 Aug 2009 I love Bing now. I've started to actively demonstrate it around some of the less techy members of the extended family who've been generally frustrated with Google. The fact that you can hover over a search result to bring up a more in depth preview of that page is a huge time saver, and as *everyone* who uses it already waxes lyrical about the video search is fantastic.

The only thing that's keeping google in my history is accidentally calling it up through muscle memory - but that will change with time.
Is it time for a UK space agency? 8:00pm on 20 Jul 2009 I don't think we need a *national* space agency which would only duplicate functions at the ESA level. No, instead we need to reform the European public space sector to be better centralised in ESA itself. There is almost no public controversy with regard to federalist approaches to space exploration in Europe; I think we can all agree the salaries of the bureaucrats who would head a national agency would be better spent on actual science and exploration.

We should definitely promote a public sense of ownership with regard ESA, though! Americans immediately identify a NASA craft as their own, but we do a poor job of allowing the public to feel pride in the European equivalents.
Driving to a greener future 4:31pm on 19 Dec 2008 It seems to me that this is an area where regulation is very much needed. Dangerous short-termism on the part of car manufacturers shouldn't be an impediment to environmental progress. We need a Big Push - massive investment in renewables, strict legislation and import restrictions to make the change that will put European industry in position to seize the low carbon market from the off.

"How do we reject or eject the unaccountable tiers of supranational commissars and bureaucrats who oversee this largess of taxpayers money?"

1) Get rid of the incumbent Commission by asking your *elected* representatives in the European Parliament to do so.

2) How do you get rid of the equally unelected and "unaccountable" bureaucrats who oversee the vast majority of British taxpayer's money - i.e. the British civil service? You don't.
Queasy over health plans 4:47pm on 04 Jul 2008 In the long term I believe integration within the EU health sector should be promoted. If there are economies of scale that can be exploited, then we should exploit them. If an EU procurement service can negotiate better drug and equipment prices, then we should create it.

It seems patriotism is a by-word for lying through your teeth. Gods save us from self declared "patriots".
