Newsnight Review: Is TV doomed? 3:56pm on 13 Mar 2009 The golden age of TV is right now.

There has never been more choice, originality, better quality (albeit spread thinly), production value and ever more convenience in viewing.

To those that hark back to a rose-tinted TV past - you can tune into various channels that satisfy that demand. Clearly the tiny audience share would indicate that even the best of these programmes doesn't attract that much attention. Indeed there have been some great TV moments from yesteryear, but there has been much more forgettable dross that seems so amateur by modern standards.

No doubt in years to come, people will be harking back to the current day and selectively recalling the best broadcasting around right now.
Thunder Bolt creates shockwaves 10:29pm on 16 Aug 2008 Bolt's casual finish was the icing on the cake for this race. The style of his victory will be remembered as much as breaking the world record or winning gold.

I'm glad in a way that he held back and can wait in anticipation to see just how much faster he can go.

Meanwhile the chest-beating image at the finish line will be an iconic image of invincibility for years to come.
Thunder Bolt creates shockwaves 8:53pm on 16 Aug 2008 There has to be a limit to how fast an athlete can run 100m. In recent years improvements in sports science, training techniques and the opportunity to earn big money has fine-tuned athletic ability to a new level.

I'd love to see Bolt run sub 9.5s, but I reckon sub 9 probably won't be achieved in the next 100 years...without genetic engineering!

I only hope that the also-rans can pick up their pace and give Bolt some decent competition in future. Otherwise he will just be racing against the clock.

Hopefully he'll be competing in the Olympics until 2028!
Britain has a drink problem 4:05pm on 22 Jul 2008 In Continental Europe a night out is usually a family occasion and is centred around good food. Alcohol is often much cheaper than the UK, but binge drinking is not an issue. Firstly the rate of drinking is slower as food and conversation is the key focus. Drinking with food also slows the alcohol absorption, so drunkenness is not as easily achieved compared to drinking without food. Most importantly though getting drink in front of family is just seen as embarrassing rather than a badge of honour as in this country.
