BBC - Proms - Prom 53: Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment 01:13am on 26 Aug 2009 Great concert made even greater by the fascinating pre-concert talk. Watching and listening to an orchestra that care so much about authenticity work their way from baroque through clasical to romantic in one evening was both beautiful and interesting. The high for me was Joyce DiDonato singing Xerxes - Ombra mai fù; though knowing the instrument changes and the effects that the changes would have from Anthony Robson (oboe) and Nicholas Logie (viola) was also special. One of the best pre-concert talks I've been to. Here's two tid bits: the first half of the programme used A at 415 MHz while the second used 430 MHz; and Anthony's baroque oboe copy is made with ivory, but fear not, it's reclaimed from old billiard balls! So a big thankyou to all involved for such a delightful evening.
Spotify - going mobile 1:29pm on 27 Jul 2009 I have premium, but my two kids (who are also avid Spotify users) do not. I wonder if you subscribe for 24 hours will it let you install the iPhone app? What happens to the app when one's subscription lapses? Hmmmm. Unlike some of the other commenters I am pleased that the BBC is thinking carefully about Spotify. I love the idea that when I'm listenning to a piece on Listen Again on the radio I might follow a link to hear other recordings of the same peice on Spotify, or extend my listening beyond the Listen Again seven days using spotify.
BBC - Proms - Prom 7: Purcell - The Fairy Queen 11:32am on 22 Jul 2009 I loved it, though it was a surprise. I'd been listening to the Roger Norrington ecording on Spotify to familiarise myself before the performance and so I had no idea how little of the piece I was listening to. It was mostly the spoken play, with additional musical interludes, sung scenes, and extras. The wild variety of the extras was bewildering and wonderful. Fluffy pink and white rabbits going at it like, well, rabbits was another surprise especially as I was there with my Mum and my Son. While other bits of the dancing was just beautiful. All in all a great fun, albeit bonkers, evening. I do have one criticism though. Why were the house lights left up? The RAH is huge so we need all the help we can get to immerse ourselves in the acting. The first twenty minutes felt like a rehearsal to me as I kept being distracted by looking around the audience as I could see them so clearly.

Coyopa's guts 3:06pm on 22 Apr 2009 I love this kind of post - it's great when the engineering detail is talked about in the open. One question though (which may show my ignorance). What does "keeping digital audio linear all the way to the encoder" mean? Linear in what sense?
Under the iPlayer hood for radio 1:30pm on 27 Aug 2008 Great post, thanks James. I love the way blogs can cut through what one should say to give you real info.

I do have one question. If you move from Real in Flash playing MP3 to an AAC solution for the on-demmand content, will one still be able to record them with tools like WMR Recorder? Sometimes I'm eager to hear a show but know I won't get round to it in the next seven days, and so being able to take digital recordings for personal use is handy.
Updated: Scrobbling your BBC Radio listening 4:35pm on 30 May 2008 This is such a good idea. It frustrates me that Last FM misses my at work BBC radio streaming which, since my wife prefers silence to music, is most of my listening!

But ...

Can we have a BBC Radio 3 feed?

Is the source and the feed available too (is it just from backstage?) I don't use the OS X Dashboard nor Y! Gadgets so it would be nice to do it some other way. And why not seperate it from the streaming - it would be great to scrobble ones broadcast listening, perhaps from one's Olinda ;-)

When you say "To date our work on Programmes has been focused on providing persistent URLs" how does that square with the seven day availability of most of the content. "Persistent" often means longer than seven days. Many of the social computing applications that excite me (e.g. Find Listen Label http://www.cookinrelaxin.com/2007/04/find-listen-label-aka-annotatable-audio.html )rely on the content's continued availability.
