Nutt gets the sack 10:05am on 31 Oct 2009 David Nutt is absolutely 100% correct, despite the meanderings of well-meaning GP's who still prescribe dangerous prescription drugs and ones which have serious toxic side - effects.
Formerly Vioxx and latterly Celebrex is prescribed freely for people with rhumetoid artheritis and other complaints such as limb injuries (post-operative) where pain management is seriously improved by cannabis and other 'natural' drugs.
What the public do not know and what politicians have yet to admit, is that it is drug companies such as Roche and GSK who perpetuate the myth that soft drugs, whether for recreational use or not areless harmful than either Cigarettes and to a lesser extent tobacco, and more so excess alcohol abuse. If anyone cared to calculate the overall cost to the NHS over the next 25 years in better health, and the drugs bill would be reduced by at least 20% saving for non-prescribing of toxic drugs. Instead to decriminalize cannabis and tax it would be far better in small quntities. Why dont we give it a try? Small smoking non-alcohol cafes, serving coffee and healthy drinksi in each town or city is far more beneficial to a 'friendly, non-violent drunken society. I estimate there are at least 6million users already.
If people already have a condition such as epilepsy or any other complaint which would render this unsuitable then with the new online NHS computer up and running it should not be too difficult to track people who are not suited to such a drug.
With E's as people call them, if they were manufactured by drugs companies and licensed and tested, taxed at the point of sale, then why not allow people to change or choose for recreational use.
Surely then our police resources could be far better utilized to stop the crime wave, arson attacks and terrorism.
Alan Johnson would be better served by resigning and sorting out the post office dispute for which the CWU require a man of knowledge to deal with heavy handed top management who frankly are destroying our oldest public service and making most of us wish Gordon Brown and his henchmen would call an immediate election.
As for Mr Johnson's predecessorI doubt she has any credibility whatsoever, and she was only a well-meaning amateur.
As a PS tere is scietific proof that celebrex, a very effective pain reliever exacerbates high blood pressure and induces heart problems - ask Dr Nutt.
Make a comment on youth unemployment 10:11pm on 15 Jul 2009 Am so sorry i mentioned Dundee - it was not intentional...was merely making a point that the housing crisis in the south is so severe, people cant afford to work in menial jobs. Which is why so many young people have no desire to work full time.
Obviously am minimum wage of £7.50 per hour in Dundee topped up by 10% in large cities and 20% in London would cause small business a lot of harm but then if foreign labour is prepared to do menial jobs for say £4 an hour off the books... then what? we need a new system and we need some order in the jobs market. No papers no job, no minimum wage paid - you get shut down or fined. why is this country so slow to do anything correctly. Even the new nuclear reactors are 10 years overdue.
Make a comment on youth unemployment 3:19pm on 15 Jul 2009 One further comment on Stephen Byrnes piece.. if you agree with my assertation about bringing back national training boards, do you think if the next government gave industry or small businesses in your industry, a huge grant to train and keep a young recruit would it make you more likely to do that providing the recruit agreed to stay in the job for say 10 years, rather like our over-educated nurses and dentists ought to do if they were trained FOC by the higher education they need.

It seems to me that by not segregating Special needs from an early age right through to university entrance, this section of the 'lost generation' are to be treated as lepers. This immoral behaviour needs to be addressed now.
My own experience is one of working with unemployed youths on New deal, which, as your other correspondents mention is mixed to say the least. Most have no hope as jobs have dried up even in the so-called booming South-East. School-leavers are finding life difficult so are encouraged in to long-term debt by taking up a shrinking number of useless degree courses only to be rewarded by jobs at ASDA or Tesco. We need more training places in industry and commerce, bring the training boards back like the 70s for all industries where growth can happen cheaply: Leisure, Hotels,light engineering and tourism. Bring back executive search within Job Centres instead of farming it out to private/charitable penny pinchers. Same with LTE for over 50s.. even 50 + has become a joke. LIE on your CV most do, and get away with an interview after which the employer cannot refuse on age reasons as it is supposedly illegal. It is about time British jobs for British people was enacted.. why not give an employer a subsidy of £2000 for the first year on Employers contributions, for taking on an unemployed 21-26 year old for their first real job.Either graduate or not. Surely this would help to relieve this awful scourge affecting Britain.
Also i think the minimum wage ought to rise dependant upon local cost of living so the MW in London ought to be maybe 20% higher than in Dundee.
In Brighton the minimum wage would not even feed a single person in a shared flat.This one size fits all is new Labour Gobledeegook.
Fewer votes for BNP 09:03am on 10 Jun 2009 Can i just say i think a lot of people feel the protest votes of the right, BNP in particular, in the areas where people want & need British jobs for British workers - well we might not agree with Mr Griffin but if the police and the Stazi, Stalinist, idealist Mr Brown does not like it - he should outlaw them - or have yet another referendum (not) on this issue of political funding and what and who is allowed etc etc.
Remember Edmund Burke; representative and responsible government - is this labour government either of these? Are they not symptomatic of the malaise in society? BNP is not my cup of tea, but the rise of protest including UKIP, will be exacerbated by PR and everyone will have a say. hopefully by compulsory voting - spoilt ballot papers or not, and rightly so. And yet, it is David Cameron who moved this forward and our esteemed yet unelected great Leader trying to steal the limelight?
Come on PM , let's have the referendum on the Lisbon Treaty you promised!
Lets have the royal commission we need, and a constitutional conference for reform of the institutions.Lets have a full inquiry in to the Iraq war! T Blair promised to serve a full 3rd term, Wonder what changed his mind? One can only hazard a guess!
In the future when History reveals all, this done deal will look decidedly undemocratic, and New Labour will be the loser.

AFTER ALL THE FUSS, IS IT NOT THE LABOUR PARTY WHO HAVE CONSISTENTLY OPPOSED PR? UNTIL IT SUITS THEM.
THIS BANKRUPT GOVERNMENT HAS NO POWER- LEST WHAT IS VESTED IN THE PRIME MINISTER HIMSELF (MORE POWER THAN THE US PRESIDENT IN FACT).

Is it not the case that Parliament shot the messenger not the culprits and whilst i would stop short of insisting on an immediate GENERAL ELECTION i feel this which hunt has gone quite far enough & is out of all proportion.
Do we not need an all party moritorium on constitutional reform led by all party leaders and experts. The speaker should be reinstated and parliament dissolved and the new house as selected/elected in 2010 be able to choose how and who should be chosen from either house.......

Justins comment is exactly my point - i have been pontificating about since the announcement on bank bail-outs.
Surely pension funds rely on capital growth and dividend income. If this is frozen, those pensions reaching maturity in the next 2-3 years will be hit very badly. Surely Joe public has the right to question the wisdom of this policy and Chancellor Darling needs to think again about this aspect of the policy which was rushed due to pressure of time. How many more of our retirees are gonig to bear the brunt of this governments total mismanagement of the economy.

I would be interested to hear how many other people agree with me on this matter and what if anything can be done to protect the funds.
Why hedge funds are crying 10:11am on 15 Oct 2008 Whilst i agree with Roberts overall analysis, i fail to see just where or how any British government could possible find the sort of figures for bank bail - outs being bandied about without printing money - lots of it. This is in itself inflationary and will cause the £ to fall further sucking in more and more expensive imports. We need to start rebuilding our finances from new manufacturing and stop relying on the City of London and insurance in particular. Any world downturn with our markets in the state they are in will surely make Britains recession longer, deeper and more unpleasant than say Germany or USA.
For this the New Labour project and the miracle of the end of no boom or bust is as Shallow as the Cabinet led by one Mr G Brown.
What the Germans did 11:10am on 06 Oct 2008 Robert- am not sure of all your sources but a top politician recently advised me that there could never really be a global or Euro-wide policy of unity. Each member state would have to assess its own capital base and individual circumstance ( Large and small countries have differing needs ....) but the policy of European unity with all member states offering full deposit protection to ensure continued liquidity and a commitment to reducing LIBOR is essential.
Could Alistair Darling do the same without legislation? Furthermore if people move too much money out of UK because of reducing interest rates the government may have to introduce temporary restrictions on capital flows in and out which stifles the market... we really are in a mess.. world-wide.
The icelandic situation is the most baffling. They have an economy built on trust. The Banking sector is 3 X the gross GDP and they purport to support the Banks to the tune of their entire pension fund. Is this not a most dangerous precendent? 300,000 citizens paying for the folly of Wall St and Speculators - surely they should beg the EC to adopt them as members and join the EURO immediately to stabalise their jittery Kroner. THe inflation rate is 15% and interest rates similar! ( Making Iceland a prime investment target)
