Cameron reminded of Afghan challenges 7:24pm on 05 Dec 2009 David Cameron does indeed seemed to have stolen the march on NuLabour over Afghanistan. But where is Gordon? Still in his bunker no doubt trying to work out plan B, C or is it D? as to what to do about bankers bonuses.

If Cameron was desperate for votes, he would have taken a media scrum with him, and made a meal out of it. Instead its a very low key visit, which has given him time to find out, from all ranks, what the problems are on the ground.

I hardly think Cameron needs to covet votes likes Messrs Brown and Co. His party is in far better shape or had you not noticed.

Cameron`s take that there will be no early withdrawal, is the very reverse of Brown`s current policy which was dreamt up in haste to appease the wavering voters.

Cameron has adopted a more pragmatic appproach. The US and UK governments have made a mess of the Afghanistan war, big time; but we are, where we are. It is now how we get from here to finishing the job as best we can.

Clearly Brown and Obama are intent on getting out as quickly as possible, as it suits them both to do so in their respective relection campaigns. That is not an issue for Cameron, whose desire is to see the remainder of the campaign run as effectively as it can be by the commanders on the ground. Not at the behest of the latest political whim decided by spin doctors in No10.

I am not in favour of the war in Afghanistan and never had been. But Cameron`s take does offer us the best opportunity to end the current conflict. Provide the guys with time and the right equipment to get the job done; but not with an open cheque book. Lets the military get on with it now, without constantly moving the goal posts.

Totally agree with you, he would not answer any questions - no change there and went off the point quite regularly. (I thought Gordon had put quite a bit of weight on today. Obviously not going jogging anymore). The trouble with Gordon is that he does not really get the idea of PMQs. He is supposed to be answering questions put to him, not asking the other two main parties for their ideas.

I also thought the behaviour of Balls today to be rather childish - about par for the course for him.

I don`t think Clegg or Cameron are really too fired up as we are still in the phoney election pre period. Wait till they are back from xmas hols and they have had an opportuntiy to dissect Darling`s spending plans in detail. Then sparks will start flying; but there is not much point Clegg or Cameron getting too exercised pre xmas.
One more heave 2:39pm on 02 Dec 2009 No one has seemed to have forced it out of Brown yet as to the identities of the eight countries he was referring to last week who were going to put extra troops in the theatre of war to fight alongside the US and UK.

Was this not one of Browns conditions that had to be met before he put more of our troops in harms way?

All I can see is the Taliban being given a greater opportunity to kill and maime even more of our young soldiers. For what purpose? This war is never going to be won. The taliban just melt away to return and fight another day.

The last time a load of Afghans who are mainly illiterate were trained up as a security force they just fled. The same thing will happen this time round. They will flee with guns, ammunition and anything else they can lay their hands on.

This whole exercise is a cynical ploy by Brown and Obama. For Brown it is to bolster his political standing as being the man in charge before the next general election. For Obama a planned part retreat pencilled in to take place before he starts campaigning for relection. He seems to me to be a man who does not have his heart in the job in hand; but is being forced to carry on by the hawks in his government. For the time being yet anyway until public opinion reaches a tipping point and he can do a turnabout with losing votes for his actions.

I still do not know the reasons for staying in Afghanistan. Like many other countries we have been there before, they never scored a win nor will we. The terrain and the mindset of the taliban will see us off - again.
Prime Minister's Questions: Schools 6:42pm on 25 Nov 2009 NuLabour`s defence is the usual one. Broadly translated - " We know, that you know, that we know that public funds have been misused; but unless you can prove it, we are going to continue to deny knowing anything wrong has taken place." A bit like the three wise monkeys really - see no evil, hear no evil and certainly say nothing about it. NuLabour certianly don`t want to upset the pro Labour immigrant vote this side of the general election.

With some much of the schools web site being cleared while the PM was on his feet, I smell a rat.

Brown was all over the place, being battered by both Cameron and Clegg. Some of his answers were extraordinary, especially when for no reason at all he started on about the tories and IHT. Bit rich really when you look at the wealth in his own government and that of Mr T.B. Esq.

Brown is ok when fed lines by his patsies; but I noticed even when this happened one of his front bench had to help him find the relevant answer amongst his papers, which he then porceeded to read out verbatim. Brown totally lost it at one stage.

Although Labour may try and spin the truth about this extraodinary funding debacle, mud sticks and Brown too boot had a terrible day. One of his worst for ages.

If a good poll causes Brown to react like this, what on earth will a bad poll cause him to do?
Reasons to be careful 3:34pm on 23 Nov 2009 There are too many variables this time round to make it a done deal for anyone. Benefit claimants are at an all time high and turkeys don`t vote for xmas. Immigration and the EU are still very high on the agenda and consequently the BNP and UKIP will take a signifcant proportion of votes away from the three main parties. The marginals will therefore not go the way people expect.

This latest poll only targeted 1000 people by phone and then the result was adjusted, so I take no notice of it whatsoever. We are a long way off yet from an election and a lot can happen to influence the outcome between now and then.

The three leaders are not particularly good at the job. Brown is just plain annoying. Cameron is weak although appears to be a nice chap and Clegg is, Clegg who?

Therefore I think the result is going to go down to the wire; but the two biggest things that will influence the outcome is, a need for change. Just how much longer can we put up with Harriet, Mandy and Milipeed etc etc? And of course the media. Already this questionnable poll has been hyped up in the media without any sort of health warning being given. One bad headline days before the election will probably decide the outcome, such is the way voters are led by the nose now. The majority of whom are incapable of making their own minds up about anything without first consutling facebook, twitter and the like. Heaven preserve us.
Britain lands key EU foreign policy post 11:38am on 20 Nov 2009 Who is in line to get her job? Never knew she existed until yesterday. Another labour classic example of nepotism. Brown now will be able to get inside information on the polls seeing Cathy is married to political commentator and President of YouGov, Peter Kellner. Just remember Cathy, there is no such thing in life as a free lunch.
If you thought it was all over... 7:18pm on 19 Nov 2009 The curse of being sponsored by Gordon Brown. Everything he puts his name to, goes belly up. Brown now supports Jeward in X factor, after saying they were no good, no hope for them. Out this weekend.
Afghanistan ifs and maybes 7:35pm on 17 Nov 2009 All Gordon wants is a nice pic glad handing Obama for the forth coming election. Obama hopefully has already seen though Gordon`s ruse and will stay at home and host the meeting there. After all America is the main player in Afghanistan and Obama is probably not taking too kindly to Gordon`s antics at the moment. One minute Gordon is marching his troops up to the top of the hill and then back down and then back up again. Grand old Duke of York he certainly isn`t - a bit of a Rodney (plonker) really. Gordon will be gone within months, one way or the other, so why should the world leaders pay any heed to what he wants to do. Think his latest reheated, "big idea," will receive short thrift.
It won't be March 7:49pm on 11 Nov 2009 This is party political broadcasting by another name. It seems rather odd that, on many occasions since NuLabour came to power, a minister was never available to appear on many of the political programmes on the t.v.

Yet by some miracle they will now be available to appear before the cameras as and when necessary. Mind you the prospect of having to watch Mandy performing twice a day is awful.

I still would not rule a March election out yet Nick. Poor old Gordon`s is looking more and more knackered by the day. Must be all the jogging ! Even his mate Obama has just slapped him down for saying that he, Obama, was going to announce a surge in troop numbers in the next few days. Apparently this is totally wrong and Obama says he may take weeks to make up his mind. Och!

Mandy can only do so much; but even with his guiding hand I think poor old Gordon will implode long before May.

Minor events are tripping him up, time and time again. One big fall and he`s out for good this time.
