Would Britain still be Great without Scotland? 2:57pm on 30 Nov 2009 Independent Scotland will adopt the euro. That will squeeze England and Wales to also adopt it. Not before time, either. Let's stop pussy-footing around Europe and become part of it completely.
When should children start school? 08:59am on 16 Oct 2009 Every time the education system is changed, it gets worse. I believe that around 20% of school leavers today are unable to read and write to any given standard. When I left school in 1954, everybody could read, write and do arithmetic.

My first school was in Dunster in 1944, then we moved back to North London in '45. None of the teachers pandered to the children during my school days and there was discipline. Now at the age of 70, (and an official grumpy old man), I despair at yet another education change.

Maybe we should take a look at education in the GDR, (as was.) Leaving out the politics, I believe they had it right.
Why should MPs pay anything back? 11:23am on 12 Oct 2009 Why bring this topic back when the bankers who have crippled the world economic system are getting away with it.

MPs expenses, however emotive they are, are a p... in the ocean compared to the fiddling bankers.
Is the Royal Mail worth saving? 10:41am on 09 Oct 2009 RFF,

I'll go along with privatising Royal Mail if the Royal Family are also privatised. As that's unlikely to happen, RM should stay in the public sector. The bosses are saying that revenue is down. (Tears).

Apparently, there is 20m + pieces of undelivered mail laying around and we're told that people aren't using the service.

The problem began with the introduction of 1st and 2nd Class post. It's been a mess since then, not because of the postal workers but because of the stupidity of mamagement. The private sector will not improve it. The only way to improve the RM is for the workers in the industry to take it over whilst remaining nationalised.

A day off sick? 10:59am on 19 Aug 2009 My age group worked hard for a 40 hour, 5 day week, paid holidays, health and safety at work, etc.

Today's workers have given it back to the employers.

Little wonder there is more sickness.

Taking the pulse of the economy 1:14pm on 15 Jul 2009 "Capitalism has within it the seeds of its own destruction." So said Karl Marx. This recession has seen these seeds turn into shoots. Unless something is done by our elected politicians to stop the unregulated free market, then the next recession could see these shoots turn into full blooms.

It really doesn't matter who is in government any more. The writing is on the wall and if it is ignored it will be at our peril.

Secondly, the war is unwinnable because the Afghans are born fighters.
Thirdly, it's a war. People die in wars. Both sides. Fathers, sons,daughters, brothers, sisters, husbands, wives.
It's 'The Universal Soldier, and he really is to blame.............'
Lastly, someone mentioned Harold Wilson. He was a great PM, but we mustn't forget Ted Heath didn't send troops to Vietnam, either. The difference is that todays politicians have no experience of war.
