'Snowballing' of cases in intensive care 11:22pm on 05 Nov 2009 We have had it. Or, it is supposed that is what we have had. Without tests taken to verify this, we have no sure way of knowing. We have just spent two weeks under self imposed quarantine, but in truth no one wanted to go out anyway. I have written at length over how frightened I was at my children and I getting this on here over the past few months. I cant say it has been better than I thought, but I can say, we got through it, asthmatics all.Our daughter we took to the out of hours because of a high temp , an horrendous headache and delusional. We didn't realise she had a high temp, the thermometer didn't register it. If you have an electronic one, check its range.The Out of hours said she had a virus but didn't say where it would go, wait and see. Later I rang the swine flu helpline as a growing suspicion dawned on me. They were very thorough and very helpful, and prescribed Tamiflu, which we had to get from the next town.
One by one the rest of us fell poorly with varying symptoms of the same theme. The good thing is we all recovered,my daughter a week, almost exactly, the baby, 4 days. My other child,didnt get it,having already been on antibiotics for a chest infection I was very concerned, but maybe that is why she didn't get it. My husband and I did with various responses. This bug appears to pick on the weak spot of its victims. My husbands throat and glands, my chest. I am nearly finished a course of antibiotics for a chest infection. It isn't the flu, it is the after effects. It is easy to understand why it spreads because just when you think you are better, and can go out and about you get hit with the secondary bit
The spread of it may be less this past week because we have just had a school break. That might be worth remembering.
Meanwhile, because it has been undiagnosed formally as H1N1 in this family, I have to decide whether to let those of us who are eligible have the vaccine or not... was it swine flu? what if it wasn't? How do I find out? or shall we just vaccinate anyway?
Whatever it was, it wasn't very nice and I have no wish to see it again or the effect of it on my children, so when in doubt, vaccinate.

It may interest you to know that the Google team are now accepting requests to become testers/bug reporters for the Wave.
If you search GW it should lead you to one of the pages related to this and you can request an invite to join the test team.
I used to think the same thing about Gmail, that is until I found gmail to be more stable and reliable than hotmail/live/yahoo etc etc. I do admit though to using it through a 3rd party and not web based. I especially like the fact that everything is kept forever until I clear it out, that has been a saviour to me on more than one occasion thanks to pc crashes and OS foul ups. Each to their own, I like it you don't :-) Fair enough.
I hope you can get in on the ground floor of Wave testing, because the more sceptical a tester is the better, the more someone can pull it apart the better the software will be in the long run. Much better to have a tester who hates it rather than someone who is blinded by Google love who wouldn't dream of saying its rubbish!!
Women who abuse children 6:59pm on 02 Oct 2009 Is it still ok for other people to take photos of ones children or is it still considered a peeping tom thing to do? Dont we need to ask ourselves if we should be taking back the right to say No? Personally I dont allow photos on the web of my kids, but that doesnt mean to say they are not there. I have a family member who insists of having the whole family on face book for all to see. How do we change this culture of a free for all without causing upset? I am now more and more cautious of this and do not allow photos shared through email. People really need to look at their own web habits and the way they share photos around and that includes how we take them. Its not ok to say these people shouldnt have been allowed to get anywhere near kids with a mobile phone camera, but how many of us have the very same facility and have taken pics of our kids or family members kids without asking if its ok? and then sharing them around the web to other friends and family like sweeties. In the days of film and processing we got sent a family photo once a year from the school photo shoot, and that was it. Now it is very different. Its pandoras box, we cannot change the technology but we certainly should be more aware of how it can be abused or how it can be abused and take more responsibility for our own children's safety.
I also feel, that it is unfair to continually slam parents who do put their kids into early years nursery because they work. Please consider this: You have a baby, the government says you have to work, you put your child into nursery and pay exorbitant fees for its care which take up most of your wages. Then this happens. I think those poor parents are in as much need of care and counselling as their children are,the whole community is damaged by this and it will be with them a long time. Empathy and sympathy not brick bats from Conservative fathers who have managed to have their wives at home to bring up baby. Life is different now, it very rarely works that way.
It is worth mentioning that a few days ago we had a report telling us that our children are being damaged because they are not being cared for by mothers. Yet on the other hand,teh government over the years has done nothing but drum into us that we have to work, we must work, we cannot stay home and look after our children.
So which is it to be? Made to feel guilty if we go to work but the government says so, or made to feel like social pariahs if we stay home and be 'only' stay at home mothers...

Who will ride Google's Wave? 6:30pm on 02 Oct 2009 I am looking forward to seeing not what it can do now, but what it CAN do in the future. Its not what it is now that is going to matter a jot the history of it is out there, the future for this technology is open sourced and google are not keeping it to themselves. All it needs is another Bill Gates to come along and see something the Google team havent and find a niche for it and off it goes into the stratosphere. Dont dismiss it as being useless and you dont need it,and cant see a need for it because in the future its likely that this is going to take off in some manner no one expected. Biddows' post has laid it all out very well indeed, Thank you.
Women who abuse children 11:27pm on 01 Oct 2009 I cannot comprehend any of this. As a mother this is every mothers worst nightmare, yet if I were to believe everything written here, I would never allow my kids to leave the house each day or see their friends.
Where do we as parents start to deal with this? I would like to say I don't believe that sex abuse by a woman is as common place as the report makes out and its all scaremongering for a good story, but I cant, I dont know.
But I ask one thing,responsible reporting. In the grab for the headlines, and the scare tactics, although you believe and have most other people believe that it IS a common place abuse in Nurseries and schools etc, that sir is implying that there are a lot of people out there abusing children in positions of care and trust, and whilst in this case these 'people' appear to have slipped through the net, I don't believe many such people have. The needs of these 'people' are for instant gratification and need, male or female, and that yes they are calculated and the crimes committed are heinous in the top degree, most such 'people' would not go through years of training and university degrees just for the chance that they might get to work with and abuse children. I suggest then that this sort of crime is not as common as say, familial abuse or by friends of the family etc, and if it is, then heaven help our children and where on earth are all the 'normal' people gone? Surely not everyone is a child abuser now? No? And that's why I ask for care when using sensationalist headlines and materials such as used here... as we have seen in the news over recent history, headlines, and sensationalist reporting along with soap operas and the like, are rapidly seen as the way of life we have, rather than the exception to the rule, they have become the rule. If this trend was to follow the same line, then this abuse because it is reported and we are told its more common place than we know, will become more common place...the vicious circle.I grew up in ignorance of evils like this, and I am glad of it, my kids cannot have the same. Sometimes ignorance can be bliss, and it is time to give our kids back their childhood before they have nothing.I am not burying my head in the sand, I am just asking for more responsibility in reporting that's all.

We pay enough, my mother doesn't have the internet and doesn't want it, why is the government making her pay? Its got nothing to do with the internet or getting people online, just how gullible do they think we are?
Expect a huge rise in mobile networking, and a lot less people having landlines.
Its not the money, its the principle.
Corner shop culture 3:58pm on 10 Sep 2009 I would love to agree with the rose coloured specs view of community cohesion and integration, but I suspect that the new shop owners and businesses you are seeing have more to do with migrants seeing a niche and a way of serving their own cultures than any real attempt at integrating into the British one. Where I live there are more EU run small shops than UK ones, and you think wow, great, and then you go to go into one and the language used is not English, the adverts are not English and nor are the customers. Now tell me precisely, where is the integration into mainstream British society coming from?
President's back to school message 9:20pm on 08 Sep 2009 You know what? I like the idea.. maybe her Majesty should do a back to school speech.
Our kids these days, they have no direction, no heroes to look up to, no one to give them real inspiration.
I liked what Obama had to say, he is quite right, work hard and you will get nice jobs, you are our countries future, there is nothing wrong in any of that, no political message, more Abe Lincoln or George Washington, price in the nation, pride in yourselves, all that is sadly lacking in our kids... you only have to look at todays teenagers to see that. I wish we had someone like that to talk tough and say those things, someone the kids can look up to, but alas today in this celebrity culture thing we are stuck in, the only folks our kids take notice of are skinny models and rich footballers. Our kids need a hero too.
Perfect Storm 2030: Public attitudes 8:37pm on 01 Sep 2009 I am ok with being eco this and eco that for the sake of my children and their children and etc, but for one thing. The whole world needs to do this, not just little old GB. We are a small nation and it is not too late to stop the immigration and population explosion we are about to see because of the current governments immigration policies.
Whilst other countries such as the US continue to disregard any attempt at changing their cars, how they live, the energy they use, the food they consume(not to mention the sheer amount) then why should we make such a huge effort? What about China? India? The Middle Eastern countries whos religious ethic includes as many children as possible for the greater good and expansion of their country and culture?
Our government insists on getting us to change and making us feel the guilt for its policies and mistakes over the years which have increased our population and shut down our farming and manufacture, so why should we as a public now do what they say? Unless the whole world and I do mean the 'whole' world stops trying to invade and enforce various ethos' on other countries and starts to look at their own back yards then sorry, but the 30 year perfect storm is unstoppable and probably closer than we think. This isnt being all doom and gloom however, mother nature has a way of sorting things out so lets hope that happens before the perfect storm does!
Has Twitter's popularity peaked? 7:39pm on 13 Aug 2009 I have been around the web now for some 9 -10 years so I am not a newbie or a net virgin. I design websites etc, and blog along with the rest of them, but I simply don't 'get' Twitter. Theres no point to it. Its not for average pc users or even mobile ones, and not everyone has a mobile with a keyboard attached to it. Its over hyped very specialised and a niche 'application' (how I hate the work application which implies it is something of use, Twitter certainly is not!) Its all about the Me me meeee culture and the sooner 'networking' and twitting hit the trough of disillusionment and stay there, the happier I will be.
