Facts about file-sharing 2:07pm on 27 Nov 2009 The BPI and the four big labels it represents seems to be willing to do ANYTHING to keep control of what people listen to. File-sharing and other modern technologies have allowed small, genuinely independent labels (I have one) the opportunities to distribute music that hasn't been cynically designed to separate musically unsophisticated teenagers from their money. The big labels have utterly failed to keep up with the modern world, fighting to maintain outmoded 20th century business models with their massive unsustainable overheads. They blame everyone but themsleves for their own ineptitude. In the long run, they will fail and die and new business paradigms will develop that are realistic and allow for the fact that people explore and consume music differently now than in the days when the unimaginative accountants behind the big labels were young. This is the modern world and the BPI needs to adapt or die. It's happened to dinosaurs before...
Spotify - going mobile 11:56am on 27 Jul 2009 "...the iPhone doesn't let you run multiple applications so you can't do anything else while listening to your music...."

Yet the iPod app already in my iPhone does that without any problem.

What? Just like the iPod that the phone already has in it?

Spotify is just the big four labels trying to maintain a slice of the rapidly dying music industry. Spotify is the biggest red herring around and will not survive financially. The real future of music lies elsewhere.
Patents, pirates and iPods 3:53pm on 06 May 2009 Back when Napster was sued for copyright infringement, a huge fine was taken to recompense rights holders. I recently heard a high-level music business lawyer say that he was unaware of any artist ever receiving a penny of that money. That is the reality. Any proposed additional charges on technology will simply go towards making multinational companies (they're not even record companies any more...)even richer and the atists will be as under-rewarded as they ever were.
Spotify versus last.fm 3:54pm on 12 Feb 2009 Spotify? The big labels and few 'independents', probably actually owned by the big labels. It's the old dinosaur industry, trying to cash in on the new world. With Last FM it is possible to listen for weeks on end without ever hearing anything from the big few labels. This is why they hate it and will do whatever it takes to hijack it or kill it. Watch out for lawsuits.
Grammar test - your turn 10:11am on 19 Nov 2008 One of my biggest complaints is that the BBC regularly chooses to use American English where there is already a perfectly good English English term or spelling. Is this merely ignorance by BBC writers, or is it a delberate contribution to the UK's increasing capitulation to the US empire?
Gutsy Gates 11:18am on 30 Jun 2008 No one is asking the question: 'Why would Iran use a nuke?'. Palestine is seen as a waqf, a permanent religious endowment of land. I cannot see any religious Muslim ever nuking a holy place such as that. They're hardly going to nuke Palestine on behalf of the Palestinians are they? You don't free a land by turning it into a nuclear wasteland. No, on the unlikely chance that Iran is really trying to develop a nuclear military capability, it will be for deterence against the genuine threat from those who believe in a 'Greater Israel' that would steal land all the way to the Iranian border if they could. Small tactical nukes could take out Israeli tank columns as they cross Syria. Israel is ultimately safe because it has nukes and can destroy all the nations around it. Those nations aren't safe because Israel has nukes.
