Death by a thousand cuts? 2:13pm on 02 Dec 2008 The German and French Governments (who between them run the EU anyway) have done a good job. They've protected their massively important and very successful car industries. By implication, they've also secured the economic progress of their respective countries at the cost of the environment and us, the people who live in Europe.

Until recently the EU was pressing hard for a real pollution revolution, but Germany was already making serious noises against the proposals. Suddenly we have a compromise which is no compromise at all - by 2012 most cars will be LESS polluting than these so-called targets! The likes of BMW and Mercedes must be laughing up both sleeves at once! God save us from politicians.
The BBC licence free? 4:27pm on 25 Nov 2008 Currently I am living in Austria. The only BBC TV I can watch is BBC Prime. This appalling channel repeats the same few programmes ad nauseum, sometimes several times in a single day. It shows old serials with the episodes in random order and every programme is separated by the same few dreadful fillers, such as educational films about Cardiff or paper-making.

This is the future of mainstream BBC if the licence fee is abandoned.
The BBC licence free? 4:21pm on 25 Nov 2008 I want to keep paying a licence fee specifically because that's what makes the BBC unique.

If it is funded in more conventional ways it will become just another conventional broadcaster - profit driven above all else. That would be very bad for all the values the make the BBC so special.

Whatever it costs, I'll keep buying that licence (oh, and no ads on the telly, radio or website please).
