I notice that the graph goes back to 1967 - two years after the abolition of the death penalty for murder. I wanted to compare changes before and after 1965.
Only a few years ago it would have been possible for me to argue that the abolition started the current obsession with the rights of murderers and other criminals at the expense of victims. Nowadays this is not politically correct and I suspect the absence of information is no coincidence.
Maybe someone can prove me wrong by supplying the information I want (of course the increases may be related to other factors).
I also agree with Cping500 about 'petrolhead juries,' etc. However the rate of death due to road traffic accidents is said to be falling.
Spotting a sociopath 9:51pm on 08 Dec 2008 brinberlin suggests there is no evidence that punishment prevents crime. Why is it, then, that statistical comparisons for murder rates before and after the Abolition of the Death Penalty are impossible to find? Could it be that such information is not published because the truth is just too politically incorrect?
To be effective as an evolutionary force appropriate punishment will have to prevent procreation - but always works after the event. However as a deterrent it works well, I've no doubt, and it's high time it was extended.
Am I the first to bring up this issue or have the others been edited out (as i expect I will be)?
Spotting a sociopath 9:18pm on 26 Nov 2008 Lordphilipwarren and others' attempts to define the 'sociopath' lead to the current phenomenon of 'medicalisation' at the extremes of the broad spectrum of human personality and behaviour. One consequence of this is likely to be efforts by lawyers to mitigate defendants' behaviour with excuses of a 'condition.' Social workers and mental health professionals would do better to exercise the 'respectful scepticism' recommended in the courts recently.
Also, membership of a political party, of whatever view, is a clinical indication of nothing. Whoever suggests as much is at least as worthy of suspicion...
If 3-4% of males have sociopathic personality characteristics (as suggested above) the chances are that everyone who is socially active knows someone fitting this description. I am a health care professional who has worked with 'sociopaths,' none of whom were/are patients...
Humbling of our banks 00:16am on 13 Oct 2008 Please excuse me if I'm a bit slow off the mark but... Where is all this money the banks 'must raise' coming from. Surely European governments have other priorities for, at least, political reasons (e.g. healthcare and defense) and the sums are so vast in total. Are we going to be bought-up/owned by the Chinese and Russians? If so, not such a surprising legacy for Thatcherism (where all this started).

Drug treatment - success or failure? 05:40am on 04 Oct 2008 "Ashrobins" response to Mr Easton's blog is a good example of what is wrong with current drug treatment policy. Hands up all you taxpayers who want to fund treatment for addicts or users who don't want to become abstinent.
She/he seeks to absolve drug users from responsibility for their behaviour and works in conflict with the principles of successful rehabilitation programmes. It is in many ways typical of the fatalism that plauges NHS 'treatment.'
Drug treatment - success or failure? 05:06am on 04 Oct 2008 I attended an interview for a position in an inner-city NHS community drug treatment agency recently. I was advised that I'd have a case load of about 51 and that it was 'strictly maintenance only' (i.e. methadone or bupenorphine). Also the job turned out to be 'band 5' (the lowest grade for a trained psychiatric nurse in the NHS).
My experience has been in residential and community intensive abstinence based rehab programmes (private and voluntary sectors) that really work and I had no hesitation in turning down the offer of the job.
The reality is that NHS agencies are under resourced and overwhelmed. It is not unknown for success to be met with violence and intimidation from the dealers who lose out. 'Maintenance' is not treatment as I would like to define it and it is time that the National Institute for Clinical Excellence conducted a review with the criteria applied to Aricept and alzheimers.

Yes, punishment should be proportionate. If he has, as I have, worked with their victims - who often suffer the consequences for life - he may like to consider what is proportionate. Punishment is most valuable as a deterrent. Physical (not pharmacological) castration would be a cheap, proportionate, and deterrent peanalty that would very likely be effective in prevention of further abuse. It may not be politically correct, however - like most things most people approve of.
