Pricking the profits bubble 1:39pm on 24 Oct 2008 at last the penny has dropped. surely this reality has been obvious for months,if not longer. Now, add to the fact that the increased amount of deposit required by new housebuyers is directly proportional to the length of time they will need to save this before they can buy their house, and you can see why we will be going nowhere fast for a few years.

The main issue still must be, when will the government realise that transferring debt, or liability for debt, does not create more available credit.. and anyway more available credit would spell disaster.

It looks like shares are going to settle at about 50% of their previous value..until house prices match this fall we are pretty stuffed just treading water.
France bets huge on Britain 2:42pm on 24 Sep 2008 It does seem odd that, at a time when it is acknowledged that being an importer or oil and gas is putting the country at a great disadvantage..we are selling off power. lets hope there is a big off switch at the English channel.

If it is ever viewed that the French are gaining an advantage from Nuclear power stations over here, with the prospect of barely affordable energy as it is,... the sort of demonstrations that have been common place in France against UK goods..will seem minute by comparison.

Huge falls in shares have been replaced, for a short time, with a huge rise.

This is doing nothing to resolve the issues at all, merely shifting the bad debt around and delaying the recession..oops... sorry "adjustment".

Boom and bust cycles.. end up with bust eventually.

Just wait until shopping becomes unfashionable... and spending money is seen as vulgar.. then the scales will tip!
Gieve to go 01:09am on 19 Jun 2008 someone should tell Gordon that although the public might be misguided enough to blame the BofE and not the government for inflation, that trick will not work twice and financial stability is firmly the mess he has caused by running an economy on debt.

It is unemployment that it going to catch us out here. Several weeks ago I posted a comment suggesting the housing situation was not resovable due to the extra lead time buyers would need for larger deposite, and we see housing builders laying off tradesmen all over the place.

The impact of the credit crunch on personal debt will cause a simple rebalance....stop shopping. I expect unemployment to be slow and then suddenly explode as companies realise they can not ride out the storm.

Inflation levels on those not working is, of course, a different ball game and far less of a factor in bad debt,etc.

In short, low inflation will not make a blind bit of difference to the rebalance. Debt reduction involves taking money out of the system. There is no way around it.
