Plotting Czech-mate? 8:08pm on 08 Oct 2009 So MrKlaus does not like the treaty and will do anything to spoil it for the rest. What the EU should do is to let him have his way and go ahead with the Czech republic. If they they then want to join later on, it will be without any preconditions from the Czech government and maybe a penalty or a probationary period. I can understand his concerns about a superstate but enough is enough. That's what democracy is about, majority rule not minority rule; he reminds me of the Republicans in the US, having lost the election they then become obstructionists and want to force their minority views on the majority.

This war was mishandled from the beginning and western europe should have stood up to the Americans and said so. The thing is that by making this war so important and pivotal to European and American security, the west is getting closer to the Soviet failure than we wish to admit. And failure will only enhance the prestige and power of the Taliban. What is obvious to me is that Afghanistan will not be a winnable war and it will only end up costing more money, and soon we will be perceived as occupiers and the whole population will go against us. The US has a fundamental flaw in its policies, it's called elections and with every day that goes by and with no solution to this problem in sight; no amount of rhetoric or high sounding words will convince the population of the US and Europe to support a half baked scheme to win the "hearts and minds" of the people of Afghanistan. Seven years later the US generals now find that their strategy is not working; that does not sound good. What if their new strategy also does not work? What next?
Playing the politics of whaling 6:33pm on 26 Jun 2009 Some countries use history, culture to continue cruelty against and exploitation of other species. Japan is wrong in the whaling issue. What if one day, some society was so powerful that they could do whatever they wanted and for some reason decided that Japanese humans would taste delicious or that something in the Japanese people helped that society with their economic needs? I suspect that Japanese would not like that, but then why should not such society engage in that type of behaviour?
Eating meat may have been a necessity a long time ago when humans were no different than other animals. But now we are more "advanced" and it is our obligation as humans to take care of this planet and all its beings. We should be gardners of this garden, for after all, this is the only place we have and if we don't take care of it, we will just disappear that much faster.
Republicans' lack of leaders 3:59pm on 25 Jun 2009 I strongly doubt that the Republicans will get their act together by 2012. First they have to get rid of all the hypocrits who always claim the moral higher ground than the rest of us but then do drugs, cheat on their wives, or have sex with the same gender.
Secondly, their pseudo political philosophy is totally bankrupt: their ideology is lower taxes and that's not an ideology but a desire. Everybody likes to lower taxes, but we need taxes to run societies. Moreover, they promote a dumbing down of American society and are mean spirited, a perfect example is their animosity towards Obama, he can do nothing right only the morally correct Republicans can.
Finally, they are just nay sayers without an pinch of a good idea to run a modern society. Just look at how McCain ran his campaign, like a drunkard sailor. And none of them have the courage to stand up to a phony Rush Limbaugh who never did anything for his country.
Therefore, until we see a total collapse of the party and a renewal with incoming of new blood with good qualities, like brains, or like Senator Lugar one of the few good Republicans, i don't see the Republican party coming up with a decent candidate.

The rest of the stuff looks more and more like a hijack of national rights, democracy in the name of efficiency.

Should EU confront fishermen? 8:41pm on 16 Apr 2009 And to the gunhoes who think it's just like Pakistan, just zap them. It's obvious you have blinders on. Clearly, the drones have done so well in Pakistan that Pakistan is now a flourishing democracy western style.
Should EU confront fishermen? 8:36pm on 16 Apr 2009 Stay out of this dispute. How about the right of free assembly and free speech? Why does that one trump the right of free passage? Maybe we should scrap this whole idea of a European Union. It is beginning to look more and more like a platform for big businesses and bureaucrats without any accountability. The firshermen are right and the Brits are wrong. I have noticed a tendency amongst British officials to preach and accuse and meddle, all the while wanting to keep their own independency.
