Would YOU give him another chance? 8:08pm on 01 Nov 2009 He said he was a multi-millionaire, and he should be fined multi-millions (I know that was probably just a boast). Massive fines would be a massive deterrent for people who think they can get away with it, and that way they can pay for their accommodation (prison) rather than the tax payer. Let me be clear that is massive fine and prison, not an alternative.

There is too much money in Premiership Football and it breeds poor role models.
In PM tonight: a brand new weather forecast! 00:02am on 16 Oct 2009 Midlands, Eastern England, South West it's not exactly Dogger, Fisher, German Bite. For England why not switch to Mercia, East Anglia, Wessex, etc. Add to that Cymru and Alba and you have a weather forecast that we can feel more at home with.

The term Midlands evokes the feeling of a geographic description, while Mercia sounds like something you might belong to and become attached to.

So please Post Meridiem on the Home Service can we have some slightly less utilitarian use of the language on the wireless.
BBC iPlayer goes HD, adds higher quality streams, releases iPlayer Desktop out of Labs 11:22pm on 31 Jul 2009 I'm hoping someone may still read this but I can't find a better way to post this at the moment.

Downloading and playing iPlayer "Who do you think you are?" in HD. Really does make the computer go wild, recent computer with media capabilities but a laptop with an AMD chip.

The TV is only 768p, but the broadcast is 1080i, so I have to download bigger than I need, and then the computer has to reprocess it on the fly into 768, which is presumably part of the reason for the computer activity, and the constant fan noise to try and calm it down.

There would be significant advantages of reduced bandwidth and processing and significant environmental benefits in having 1080 and 768 HD versions. This could be set in the preferences once, and then iPlayer Desktop would automatically choose the right version.
Desert dreams of the solar age 00:07am on 14 Jul 2009 I know it might be a big job, but surely the answer is you build a big water pipeline from the sea to a suitable site in the Saharan desert. Coloured black so it heats up all the time. A byproduct of thermal power is steam, which can be cooled to produce water i.e. you have solar desalination as well as power generation. Therefore the West gets electricity, Africa gets a share of the electricity and clean drinking water.

Yes some of the byproducts may need to be removed, but surely the potential is incredible.
What's happening in the United States ? 01:47am on 20 Jun 2009 I know a number of people who have had flu like symptoms recently, very mild, but sore throat bit of a cough, bit tired and a bit of a temperature. People put this down to a bit of a cold, because it is not flu season, and joke about it being swine flu.

It would be extremely interesting to me for the government to do some community testing to see whether there are people in the community who have such symptoms who test positive for swine flu.

If it is the case that there is widespread community transmission and the disease is very mild then this should change our approach. While all flu has the possibility to kill, anti-virals can be stood down to be kept in reserve for more serious outbreaks, such as avian flu, except for people who risk complications.

The other question needs to be asked, is should actively support the spread of mild flu, and try to manage the evolution of the virus. This flu may inoculate people against a more deadly successor in the same way as cow pox inoculated people against small pox. Obviously this is more risky then the vaccination approach, but there are always risks in healthcare, the question is how they are managed and could this be useful.
A dramatic end to a week in Yarl's Wood 01:44am on 20 Jun 2009 The question for many immigrants is not just economic, and the results of the economic rape of colonialism. Many people come here are not coming to escape poverty, but to live in freedom, escaping rape, torture and the threat of violence.

The question is how can we encourage the development of a culture of human rights across the world?

My concern with those that blame it on colonialism, is that it removes the responsibility of the corrupt governments and the people who are doing the beating, killing and raping that people are escaping. Also the corrupt regimes who line their own pockets rather than helping their own people, which undermine their own country's prosperity.

It is tempting to note that the British Empire had its faults, but many people today from across the world seem to want to live under British rule. Immigration is one of the greatest compliments that people can pay us.

However, the rights and freedoms that we enjoy in this country, and this country is far from perfect, are universal. They are the right of every man, woman and child on this planet. The challenge is to establish democracy, freedom and to remove poverty across the globe.

Part of my concern is that some people view these values as Western, but they are not, they belong to everyone. We need to find a different approach so that people can live in freedom and prosperity where they are.

There are no easy answers, but we must always act with compassion.
Children in detention at Yarl's Wood 11:53pm on 27 Apr 2009 I think the real problems are the labels, it is not "us" and "them", "immigrant", "asylum seeker", "foreigner".

I am a human, they are human, we are human.

If you would not do it to your own children, then you should not do it to these children. If you would do this to your own children - then you should be sent far far away.

The real issue is we need to work to create stability and prosperity across the world, then this would not be such an issue.
Tuesday, 3 February, 2009 8:12pm on 03 Feb 2009 I can see what good it does to British politicians to have a special relationship with America, but I cannot see what good it does the country.

Many American values are heavily influenced by British non-conformist thinking. Though Britain does not have a constitution the American constitution was influenced by British radicals like Thomas Paine.

Our history grants us special constitutional ties, but I'm frankly embarrassed by the fawning behaviour of British politicians towards America, and sometimes I think they are.

The jump off a cliff and we'll follow mentality of British politicians, makes us look like fools.

In fact, I'm rather reminded of American Oliver Hardy saying to the British Stan Laurel, "Well, here's another nice mess you've gotten me into."
Covering Gaza 01:08am on 25 Jan 2009 Sorry there is something I do not understand. There are people accusing the BBC of pro-Hamas bias and that the BBC should check its facts. But that is the whole point. How can the BBC check its facts when it is not allowed into Gaza.

Let the press in and then the facts can be checked, until then people may conclude that Israel obviously has something to hide.

On the subject of war crimes, it is not journalists who really need to go into Gaza but police. That way the crimes of both sides can be investigated and punished.
BBC and the Gaza appeal 00:42am on 25 Jan 2009 There are rights and wrongs on both sides of the conflict, but a person who needs our help is someone who needs our help.

There is no doubt that innocent people are suffering in Gaza, and that is what the DEC appeal is about.

The BBC's motto was, and I thought still is, "Nation shall speak peace unto nation."

We supposedly pay Mark Thompson his over £800,000 salary because that is what we need to do to purchase excellence, but this just demonstrates that we are not getting value for money.

It is interesting the parable of the Good Samaritan can now add the TV executive who walked past the dying man because to intervene may have led to accusations of bias.

Executive pay, Jonathan Ross and now this. Mark Thompson should resign.
