QE: More to do? 3:47pm on 06 Aug 2009 Not completely convinced by your assertion that this is a "positive surprise".

1) It is not entirely a surprise (after all you and others blogged about how it might happen)

2) The UK monetary authorities agreeing to further print money, is in no way a positive story

a) it means at best the BoE outlook is even grimmer than before;

b) and at worst, since all of it (bar 2% or so) has been spent so far on Gilts, effectively funding massive govt borrowing, the accusation of the zimbabwefication of our money just got a little bit more plausible

Please tell me what is positive about that.

The BNP in the North West, got a higher proportion of the vote than Labour did in the South West.

The electorate clearly understand how PR works, given the different patterns of voting in the Locals to the Euros.

Therefore one can not avoid the conclusion that the BNP is as of now, more representative of the people in some areas than Labour is in others.

You should know very well that parliamentary history is replete with tales and scandal and corruption, none of which meant the death of honour

Stick to reporting the facts and let us decide who deserves to be thought of as hnourable or otherwise. It is your job to leave your hurt feelings out of it.
Labour's dilemma over Royal Mail 1:32pm on 26 Feb 2009 Maybe this sounds naive, (and Stephanie Flanders could answer this rather better than Nick), but my understanding of Economics 101 is that selling assets in a "worst in 100 years" crisis is a act of desperation.

I can not see he logic of selling or part selling it now when almost all asset prices are plunging are record setting rates.

The pension deficit is a massive red herring, because it is the same problem whether or not it is sold.

So is the modernisation issue. That can be done by the Royal Mail itself.

All that is required is the political will to allow management to take on the uni...ons...No...wait, i am begining to see where my argument is breaking down.

I know he is the "Speaker", but he does not have to behave like a peice of dumb electronics just muthing the words of the executive.
President Obama: A Newsnight Special 12:53pm on 05 Nov 2008 CNN's analysis showed that in the south Democrats electing to congress consistantly did better than Obama. So Yes its a significant moment, but No we have not entered a "post racial era".
Europe - ticking time bomb? 5:54pm on 28 Oct 2008 Currently top of the political stories is GB saying that companies must urgently pass on falls in prices to consumers.

Perhaps Nick and Hay Pesto could explain to us that when GB says that he fails to mention that;

1) Tax makes up approx 50% of the pump price when the pump price was in the order of 114p per litre

2) Because the pound has depreciated so much against the USD, the actual fall in pounds in the price of oil is only about 25%

Therefore the fall in oil pries as translated into pump prices is only about 13% or so. (50%*25%)

At my local garages, the pump price is appox 99p-102p.

At the peak they were about 114p. That is a fall of approx 13%

So the oil companies are passing on the falls in prices.

But I am sure in the short space Nick and Peston have to fill such analysis will be deemed irrelevent and unimportant

Last time I checked, it was not the BBC's place to give anyone a free ride or anyone a hard time, but to impartially report, not make the news.

You know, the whole reporting on events and letting the viewer, this informed, make up their own mind thing?

Nick Robinson is the senior political journo at the BBC, and is seen ad heard by millions. So when HE CHOOSES to place emphasis on the Bruge Group dinner, then we are entitled to draw our own conclusions on his and his employers judgement and the factors that seem to be influencing it.

The shocking revelation that the Bruges Group contains many members who want out of Europe.

The stunning news that Norman Tebbit is, I can hardly bring myself to say it, Euro Sceptic!

The outrageous scandal that not everyone in the Tory party is wholehaeartedly Europhilic.

The terrible Cassandra vision of horrific nightmarish negotiations with the rest of the EU that might happen if everything happens the worst possible way that can be dreamed up in a Stephen King book.

Nick, the UK is full of serious stories happening right now. The most serious financial crisis since at least the 30's is now infecting peoples real lives at an alarmingly quick rate.

For heavens sake get your brain under control and understand that peoples homes are being repossed, peoples jobs are being lost, peoples finances are being crippled, peoples businesses are being crippled, and all are far more important and news worthy than donations NOT made and futures UNLIKELY to happen.

These are serious times, and serious times require serious journalism.
The responsibility of borrowing 3:47pm on 27 Oct 2008 The Golden Rule was the symbol of everything the Chancellor of the day wanted himself to be projected as.

Along with no more boom and bust, the golden rule was the easy to grasp concept (if not easy to prove in actuality) that everyone 'knew' that G Brown knew his stuff.

But the reputation of G Brown is about to be officially buried by the current chancellor, along with his Golden Rule.
