Winter workhorses rule! 3:27pm on 30 Jan 2009 I'm delighted that Cahill is finally getting the recognition that he deserves, considering since hes joined Everton hes scored 1 in 3, which is incredible for a midfield player. However I think that Everton's stand out player so far this season is Phil Jagielka. He is an incredible defender, together with Lescott they are a brilliant partership. When you have a back two keeping the likes of Joseph Yobo out, then you know something is going right. I honestly think Evertons defence is currently the 3rd best in the league after Man Utd and Chelsea.
Madejski right to hit out at wages 11:52pm on 23 Aug 2008 I agree and disagree, I disagree for the reason that football is a very short term career and not every player will ply his trade in the footballing world after their playing career. Therefore when an average championship player earns as much as they do, they of course will live a higher quality of life than most, but they still need the financial security for when they hang up their boots. A policeman for example will be able to do their profession at a standard wage until normal retirement age. Whereas a footballer will only be earning this high amount for a certain amount of time and then upon the age of 35 will be untrained in a proper working profession. Which in some cases if this happened and the player was earning a basic middle-class working salary, then at this point he would be in financial turmoil.
On the other hand I do feel that matchday tickets are way overpriced and I think the best way for this to be resolved would be for wages to be cut. This refers more to the premiership. I think a team like Chelsea's first rate players (Lampard, Terry, Ballack) could all get by perfectly well with 40% less than they are on now. The results of this would be in the best interest of football.
Arshavin would grace Premier League 02:45am on 19 Jun 2008 Phil, im slightly disgusted by your comments towards Everton. Harsh but fair..... I have no idea where the fairness comes into it. This player is not going to get in a top 4 team and below them the best team is Everton as proved in the previous two seasons, finished 6th then 5th compared with Tottenhams 5th then 11th. I dont know what in your eyes forms an 'illustrious' club, but you cant get too much more illustrious than the team ranked 5 in the best league in the world. There are hundreds of thousands of football teams in the world and 5th in the premiership is extremely illustrious. I think with no offence to Man City fans, they are temporary and have an awful chairman at present who wants instant success and In my experience Its a recipe for disaster. Whereas Everton have class, consistency and a ruddy good manager who is chomping at the bit to get the funds to make Everton a consistent top 4 placed team.
