Listeners' Opinion Poll 4:25pm on 20 Apr 2009 In the light of news that Bob Quick's blunder had no effect on the investigation it concerned, http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8008784.stm, do you think that the news gathering organisations who forced his unnecessary (and possibly dangerous) resignation should pay him unfair dismissal compensation?
The BBC and the DEC. 2:40pm on 26 Jan 2009 As someone who is generally on the side of the Palestinians - certainly in this instance with the poor ordinary people in Gaza, and who has already donated money to the appeal, I think the BBC have got this right. Even if the original decision was borderline, now that politicians have weighed in saying that they believe the appeal should be broadcast there is no way the DG can go back on his decision. He has to stick to his guns. I suspect that thanks to the hoo-haa the appeal has received more attention in the press than it would have otherwise.
Who's right? Paddy? Or me? There's only one way to find out. FIGHT! 12:57pm on 02 Jan 2009 Def with Paddy on this one. What do you lose in sending the letter? Nothing in my view. You might make someone at the council smile before they reject your appeal out of hand.
The BBC licence free? 12:54pm on 25 Nov 2008 I would also happily pay if the license fee were voluntary. At it current rate or up to GBP300 or so a year. Living some of the time in another country - we really don't know how lucky we are. That the BBC has to put out lower quality pure entertainment programming to generate the audience figures that justify the license fee is fine with me. I don't have to watch anything I don't like and so long as they continue to make woman's hour, today PM etc etc etc I'm happy to pay.
Vaccinate or not? 12:50pm on 25 Sep 2008 Because its really likely that when contemplating whether or not to have casual sex, the average 15, 16 or 17 year old thinks to themselves:

"now, I didn't get the HPV vaccine at my Catholic school, so I mustn't have sex"

They're going to be thinking about many things, but this isn't one of them. The idea that giving young women a vaccine against a virus (that might cause cancer which that might kill them) is going to encourage them to have sex is ridiculous. Young people have sex because they have sex drives, they fancy each other and because that's what young people are programmed to do. Have all the governors of this school forgotten what its like to be young?

Mussolini's palace, for the birds. 4:04pm on 12 Sep 2008 We have many of the sculptures pictured scattered in fields around and about. Sometimes an 'artist' will come along and move them about. Sometimes we see them travelling aloft on the other side of the hedge. Beautiful late on a summer's evening when the shadows are long.
The Glass Box for Thursday. 5:58pm on 11 Sep 2008 PR chap talking about the E.on gaffe. "Undisciplined messaging" sounds like drunk in charge of a mobile phone.
Do you want to choose the hospital you're treated at? 2:09pm on 02 Jul 2008 No thanks. Just knowing I'd get good treatment at any hospital, ideally my local one, is all I ask for.
Fathers and new babies. 8:42pm on 14 Apr 2008 On the whole this is a good idea, although it clearly would take a significant investment & would probably need to be rolled out very slowly as new hospitals are built. In Norway, there is a large, state of the art maternity hospital which has a "patient hotel" attached. New families move in after the birth of a child (this includes existing children in the family) where they have post-natal care available - including breast-feeding support where necessary. Norwegian fathers have about six weeks paternity leave, spread through the first year of their child's life. Needless to say, there is extremely good father/child bonding in Norway amongst the current generation of fathers.
