Was 2,000 a myth? 08:28am on 16 Oct 2009 Yes, why exactly are the British troops allocated, full time, the most dangerous province, Helmand? Why don't the other Nato (apart from the US) members take turns of tours of duty there?

Why isn't Brown negotiating a better deal for our troops with other Nato leaders, instead of squabbling and fermenting division amongst his own generals? After all, he's saved the world, and he's World Statesman of the Year.
Rising slowly 1:31pm on 14 Oct 2009 Rising slowly eh? Nothing to do with the fact that HMRC has been deferring company tax and VAT payments of @ £10 billion at the start of the year which has risen to an estimated £30 billion now… a situation which will probably continue until the election.

Once those payments are called in, watch that unemployment bird fly!

Pensioners have just had their action to not be forcibly retired at 65 refused by the High Court — a decision met with much outrage from Age Concern and those who wanted to continue in their jobs, but you and the Unions are working up a froth about those who at present are relatively young people having to work an extra year to build up their entitlement. I certainly don't mind working an extra year if it means my state pension will be an earnings-related one… why hasn't anyone done this before?

In addition, are the government admitting that the hundreds of billions poured into the NHS has been totally wasted, as it hasn't improved life-expectancy or general health beyond 65? Again, what rubbish.
Benefit cuts consensus? 01:38am on 06 Oct 2009 My uncle John (who died in 1981aged 52) had a pituitary gland disorder for which no treatment existed in the 1930s… he was, what would be termed in those days 'subnormal' and my grandparents spent the first 12 years of his life trying to get a diagnosis. My grandparents devoted their lives to his care and never received one penny from the state, although he had frequent and debilitating health problems throughout his life.

Throughout the 1950s, Uncle John worked in the London dockyards, then in a laundry and various other low-skilled jobs. He only stopped full-time work in 1976 when my grandfather died and he was needed at home to care for my grandmother which he did until his own death.

If someone with such profound mental and physical disabilities could carry on working for 27 years, how is it that nowadays people with 'depression' or 'stress-related' problems qualify for £86 a week?

He kept zooming in and out on the Conservative leader in a way that made me feel quite queasy… not some BBC master plan to make watching Mr. Cameron unwatchable was it? Or maybe it was just nerves induced by filming the next Prime Minister of the UK.

Have you any clue at all about how much we already owe? Multiply by a factor of 15 and then add on another 50% of that for PFI and unfunded public sector pensions. That'd be some recovery and quite some 'cash in' too!
The politics of 'proper behaviour' 8:53pm on 29 Sep 2009 When few parents have grown up themselves — thanks to benefits and the nanny state — why should we expect them to instill grown up civilized behaviour in their offspring?

Those which are trying the independent route by working (gasp) are so flat out paying off their mortgages, council tax, ever-increasing transport costs, energy bills, childcare bills, they barely have the energy to swat a fly — let alone intervene in their feral children's behaviour.
