Sorry for the pedantry, but I do wish teachers would get things right - the correct expression is "free rein", as in giving a horse its head, rather than "free reign" which would be giving Prince Charles a free ride to rule the roost ;-)

My query is with the BBC. They are the ones who switched from Real to WMA without alerting their internet radio and dial-up customers and without ensuring the system worked properly. Reciva has reacted quickly to get the WMA streams working, once they were told by customers (not by the BBC) what was going on. WMA doesn't function properly on my internet radios. I listen from abroad, mostly to on-demand programmes, which used to work well in Real and now are in a complete mess (whether that is a Reciva or BBC problem, I don't know). Also, a really useful function of the Real on-demand system is the FF, Pause and RW, which I don't believe is available via WMA files - it's certainly not a facility of podcasts or programme streams via Reciva or when listening on line via WMA at the moment.

Writing as an English person who's lived in French-speaking Switzerland for the past 18 years, could I just tell Lynwen Davison that the French Navy joke works perfectly - "it is time" translates as "c'est l'heure".
Laughed my head off when I read it, as did 14 year-old bilingual daughter when I told it to her.

Your feedback on the redesign 8:58pm on 06 Apr 2009 I've decided, it must be an internal coup aimed at closing Radio 4 down completely. That's the only reason I can see for doing such damage to the web site, the various programmes' home pages and the usability of the Listen Again links.

(Oh, and please tell your spell-checker that I am not talking about computer programs but radio programmes and that if I had access to a BBC licence, I would pay for it as I'm not American.)

Oh God, you've done it again. You did it with the BBC Radio Player and now you've done it to the Radio 4 web site. I reiterate every negative comment made above with particular emphasis on "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Just because I'm over 50 doesn't mean I'm wrong about what I want to see on the web site and how I want to use the Listen Again system.

If only I lived in Tunbridge Wells, then I could be Disgusted. Well, I am, anyhow.

I did not vote for Thatcher Senior, I think she was abominable and did untold damage to our country. But this is the BBC behaving beyond ridiculously.

The BBC licence free? 6:29pm on 25 Nov 2008 I live in Switzerland, where my husband insists we pay about GBP 33.00 per month for the dubious pleasure of a Sky TV package. I would gladly pay that, if not more, just for BBC Radio output.
