Checking your gas man's credentials 3:12pm on 11 Dec 2009 I have no doubt there are many skilled engineers out there. It is however, impossible to find anyone you can trust. I don't think it matters what vast amount of qualifications or how many certificates they have as a customer you are just as likely to get a trained half wit as a skilled and sensible operative.
As far as a DIY person being as good as a skilled specialist I have to say that there are many DIY people who do a very fine, safe and professional job and much as the public are not supposed to deride the performance of the professional this should actually go both ways. What is necessary is professionalism and quality which can just as easily be missing from a registered person as the DIYer. However, at least the DIY person knows when he is out of his depth. The Professional seems to just charge the money and run!
Follow-Up to BBC Red Button Changes on Freeview 12:18pm on 11 Nov 2009 Its a great shame that the limited bandwidth of this potentially great service has been wasted on so much rubbish. does anyone ever listen to radio on their TV? I doubt it. 24 radio stations could all be removed. Add in the other TV channels including the so called lifestyle ones and those of dubious worth plus the encrypted ones that so far in my work I have never seen anyone use and you have to ask why are there these 23 or so worthless channels there. Ofcom needs to seriously reconsider the bandwidth allocation. Soft porn, parliament, bid up, gambling, text dating. Surely someone somewhere has taken their eye off the ball here.

Since there are no current hi def Freeview boxes then surely the spec is still on the drawing board. Rather than duplicating the transmissions to give two BBC1 channels in both definitions surely a double multiplex should be in place to save bandwidth. If you get my meaning as an example a black and white TV could view colour TV pictures so a standard Freeview box should just not see the extra data in an adjacent or additionally multiplexed feed that would upgrade the quality of the channel to hi def. Engineering surely cannot come up with something that works like that.

Meanwhile those without cable TV in Hi Def from Virgin fibre network will migrate back to Sky. Do we want to give Sky leaverage ? I think not.
Checking your gas man's credentials 9:02pm on 24 Sep 2009 I have concerns that you are confusing the gas fitting of all engineers who are not gas safe or corgi registered as rubbish or unsafe whilst promoting that carried out by certified people as 100% perfect! This is blatently not the case. I come from a family of engineers and DIY experts who over the years have mastered all the expertise necessary to deal with just about any eventuality in the home, be it electrical, electronic, plumbing, gas fitting, building or car maintenance or just about anything else you care to mention. However, [edited] our mothers new gas cooker and found it was faulty (all the gas fitting was secure and checked for leaks etc) we had to call in a third party to fix the unit under warenty. Just after he had left it was fortunate I was on my way there as my elderly mother rang in a panic to tell me she could smell gas. When I got there I discovered that the fixed pipework I had installed had been loosened no doubt to make my mother call the gas man back and where he would have obviously charged for the repair of the pipework. These [removed as breaks house rules], for that is undoubtably are are quite prepared to kill someone for the sake of a £100 callout to fix something they created.

We as a family do not under any circumstances allow any tradesmen into our homes as their reliability, trustworthyness and honestly is always in doubt. So I think you need to redress the balance by highlighting that there are many non qualified installers who do a damn good job, far better than those we are supposed to trust.

No more bright sunny days 12:40pm on 24 Jun 2009 Kodak and many of the other 35mm film compnies really have themselves and there developers and printers to blame. For some years I have used both digital and 35mm SLR cameras, sometimes along side one another with the same exposure settings and whether you pay very highly for the 35mm developing or dirt cheap the results are just not as bright or colourful as digital. Indeed, I have to ask where has the colour gone on many 35mm prints as they are uniformly grey and un interesting. Is this a case of film makers shooting themselves in the foot? Or a heightened chroma channel output on digital? At present the realism of digital and the brightness and dynamic range means there is no way current 35mm can compete. Add the use of raw file type and the ever increasing pixal count and lower thermal noise and there is just no point in getting the old SLR's out anymore. But what do you do with them? Sad really.

Coe's London legacy challenge 09:17am on 21 Aug 2008 Enough is enough. How many more wasteful building schemes for the Olympics can this world take? We didn't need to run 2012 here and least of all in London. There is only one place that should run the Olympics where we can all share in the investment and build on it year on year and that is Africa. I don't care which country as the Olympics should be a country in its own right. But we need to invest here to solve some of the economic mess most of this continent is in but also it would form a catalyst around which we could build a secure green and sustainable environment for all the African peoples. Surely this is the sort of thing the Olympics should be promoting long term.
