China completes the climate circle 10:22am on 27 Nov 2009 The BBC ostrich method of (not) reporting a story they don't like. Stick your head in the ground and hope it all blows over.

How can the Richard Black, the BBC's top 'environment correspondent' ever be taken seriously again? How can we trust you Richard, when you just ignore the biggest environmental story for years.

You stated on another thread that it is not the BBCs role to comment but to analyse. Leaving aside for the moment the fact that the BBC comments on stories all the time, where is the in-depth analysis of the content of the e-mails? That means all of them, not just a couple.

One of the most shameful ever episodes of bias and non-reporting I have ever witnessed at the BBC (and there is a lot of competition for that honour).

If the kind of information regarding the practices of the climate scientists was coming from say the drug industry or the tobacco or oil industries, the BBC would be all over it like a rash. There are some quite shocking revelations in those mails, but to get this comment through I am not even going to mention them as I am sure the mods will just delete the comment.

Does the BBC not think that the contents of these mails deserve investigation? When did the BBC decide that because a story might be damaging to one side of an argument they will not cover it? Yes, they covered the hack but they have so far buried any mention of the contents of the hack. The BBC cannot hide behind the fact that the information was obtained in an underhand (illegal) way, as they base stories on that kind of information all the time (eg the recent expenses scandal).

Never have I seen such a potentially big story, with suggestions of underhand and perhaps even illegal practices, buried so deep at the BBC. Note, I make no assumptions about the true story beneath these mails, they are selective, and we do not know the full story, but isn't this what a multi-million pound BBC is supposed to give us, the full story?

When did journalism at the BBC drop to such a level where they refuse to even mention the meat of such a story?

It seems that rather than unbiased journalism, we are getting advocacy from the BBC now. They have a belief in AGW, and any story that might tarnish their side of the argument is to be ignored. Again note that I am not even disagreeing with AGW, but an unbiased news organisation must look at the whole picture and examine all parts of the story.

Oh well, that goodness for the blogosphere, and even some of the other MSM. At least the BBC can't suppress the story on there.

Will you pay for a Digital Britain? 11:30am on 24 Sep 2009 In the same way we already pay a TV tax, even if we don't watch BBC, people are now going to be expected to pay a telephone tax even if they don't want the internet. Another crazy idea from a government way past its sell-buy date.
Clear answers to straightforward financial questions? 4:18pm on 10 Aug 2009 It's not really surprising that banks will not talk to the BBC. Whatever the mistakes they made in the past (and they sure did make some big ones) it seems that the BBC have chosen bankers as the ones who should shoulder all the blame for the mess we are now in. Of course, they should take their share of the blame, but so too should this government under whose watch this crisis was allowed to happen. But the Labour line is now to shift all their share of the blame onto the banks, and of course the BBC will go along with this. Anything to minimise the impact on Labours popularity before the election is good by the BBC. The venom seen in BBC interviews with bankers compares starkly with the easy ride given to the government. Still, shouldn't really be surprised, the left, including the BBC, has forever hated big business and big profits.
What would Tories cut? 00:06am on 01 Jul 2009 Wow Nick, one of the most biased pieces I have seen on the BBC for a long time. The Labour line in the next election is to try to scare people about Tory cuts, and what do we get from Nick.....Tory juxtaposed with cuts. It's almost as if Nick is being fed his strategy from Labour HQ.

The poster was right above when they said Nick, and the rest of the BBC, are getting worried. When Labour won the election in 1997 Jane Garvey on
BBC Five Live said (May 10th, 2007) "I do remember... the corridors of Broadcasting House were strewn with empty champagne bottles. I'll always remember that". Do you think champagne bottles will be lying around after the next election? Not on your life.

The BBC will rightly be ducking for cover. We can only hope that the cuts that Nick is so keen to flag up fall a bit nearer to home. Any broadcaster that can send nearly 400 people to cover Glastonbury is deserving of cuts.

Expect more 'stories' like this one as we near the election as the BBC go into full-on 'Save Labour' mode.
Tools of the trade 09:35am on 08 Apr 2009 Oh not again. Do you really need to insert 'twitter' in every other blog report. OK, so you used twitter and social network sites, big deal. This is mainstream not novel. I don't see you making mention of the use of phones or e-mail. It's almost like the BBC have some commercial interest in twitter the amount of plugs it is given.
Click's botnet experiment 11:01am on 16 Mar 2009 So, according to the BBC it's OK to hack into a computer system, as long as there is no intent to cause problems. So presumably it would be OK for me to hack into the BBC system, change settings and use it to send mail?

The BBC are so arrogant it is unbelievable. We know best, so we do what we want.

I also think you have broken the law.

Under the Computer Misuse Act 1990:

3(1) A person is guilty of an offence if

a) he does any act in a way which causes the unauthorized modification of the contents of any computer; and

b) at the time when he does so the act he has the requisite intent and the requisite knowledge.

3(2) for the purposes of subsection 3(1)b above the requisite intent is an intent to cause a modification of the contents of any computer and by so doing

a) to impair the operation of any computer;

b) to prevent or hinder access to any program or data held in any computer; or

c) to impair the operation of any such program or the reliability of any such data.

As you can see, the hacking done by the BBC clearly falls under section 3(1)a and 3(1)b. The requisite intent under 3(2)a is also met. Any change of, and storage of, code in the memory of a computer will make this part of the memory inaccessible to other programs, i.e. the performance will therefore be impaired. Further, sending email on that system reduces the available bandwidth to the owner, again impairing the system.

Breaking the law, whatever the motives, is still breaking the law. But hey, we're the BBC so we will just ignore that.

Yes, sounds about right. But if the BBC think we can't already rip programs from the iplayer (or watch them outside the UK) they are fooling themselves.
(Em)Bedding In 4:52pm on 12 Mar 2009 I was wondering why the BBC chose to make their media player unable to buffer content when the pause button is pressed. On every other video site, you press pause and the video continues to load, not so the BBC's version.

I live in a very rural area where sometimes my connection is very slow. On other sites I can start a video, press pause and come back later to watch something that has loaded while I browse. Press pause on the BBC player and everything stops.

Is their a technical reason why this is designed like this, or just a poor design choice. Unfortunately we don't all have super fast speeds, and the player at the moment is a real pain to use.
