The real question about waterboarding 08:36am on 21 Apr 2009 If internatonal law does not apply to the US then you can see why people who feel they have a grievance with the US resort to using violence to make their opposition known. Calling that terrorism disguises the problem.

If he wants progress in the Middle East he needs to rein in Israel. The more he is silent on everything from the increase of settlements on Palestinian land, Israel's assertion that they are not bound by the US brokered Annapolis vision, ethnic cleansing and punishment of the Palestinian civilians for electing politicians Israel doesn't like, to the building of the land-grab wall that was declared illegal by the international court, the more he is admitting he is more concerned with keeping AIPAC happy than the people of Europe.

If he wants to move to new era in US relations with the rest of the world, he has to stop telling us that Al Qaeda's hate for the US is our problem.

I believe the reason the insurgency went quieter was because an enormouis number of them were bribed to put down their arms. OK it was called a salary and many of them were meant to be working with the Iraqi government, but look at the comments from those who are not going to continue getting paid any more and it reveals a lot.

A worrying comment from Obama: "we're going to continue to protect our civilian and military operations in Iraq".
That presumably means the world's largest US embassy in Baghdad and the permanent military bases.

Anyone who thinks Iraq is settled is naive.

Afghanistan is actually about Gas.

Check out who signed the contract to build a gas pipeline all the way acrooss Aghanistan a week after the Taliban were overthrown!

Something about getting access to gas reserves on one side of Afghanistan to ports on the other.

PS: the answer is the US.

The end of the War on Terror? 07:33am on 25 Feb 2009 Obama is right and Cheney/Bush/Wolfowitz and co were wrong. Obama is having the guts to talk about the cause of the terrorism - something avoided by the previous administration because it pointed a finger of guilt back at the USA.

I don't expect Obama to be too different from previous Presidents. He's going to put America first, even at the expense of foreign countries that the US controls via aid/finance programmes tied to conditions that suit US policies.

Never mind Iran, Egypt and Saudi Arabia are heading for a revolution by the people against their "puppet" leaders. Combined with the Wall treet Bankers who triggered the world's financial problem the US has a lot to answer for.

I wish Obama luck. At least he can talk without sounding an idiot.

The last paragraph of the article is about whether the new administration will be as pro-zionist as some fear. I'd say that includes US aid to Israel as being under discussion. And with around 8billion dollars of US loan guarantees propping up Israel's economy, Id say that's significant enough to warrant a mention.

On the last point about tourism to Israel, I'd suggest that with Israel's current pariah state reputation in many parts of the world that might be wishful thinking. Once Israel starts caring about what the rest of the world thinks of it, then who knows what could happen.

It lists economic, food and military aid to Israel. That's in adition to loan grants, tax free loans etc etc etc.

Don't allow your semetic paranoia obscure the facts.

Anything which perpetuates this situation is bad, and Rahm Emanual's appointment is not a good sign. His father's comments in an Israeli paper says it all.
I'm not anti-semetic but I think Obama should say to Israel: given the fact that the US is nearly Bankrupt, I'm putting on hold all those millions of dollars you get from us to prop up your economy.
Then Israel would have to worry more about what the rest of the world thought of them, and that could lead to some different thinking in Tel Aviv.
