No-one can rewrite political history 10:13pm on 14 Sep 2009 Your words from your earlier broadcast about Gordon Brown using the word cut: "...drawing the battle lines between us and the conservatives".

Was this a slip of the tongue or a Freudian slip on your part?
He failed to lead 7:15pm on 19 May 2009 Michael Martin should have gone long ago. If anything, the expenses fiasco has been the least of his problems. The fact that he debased the office of Speaker by behaving as a government stooge from day one is all the reason needed for his ultimate humiliation to be a reason for great joy.

Interested to see which Labour stooge Gordon foists on Parliament next.
Confusion on the wildcat strikes 4:31pm on 02 Feb 2009 It's not really relevant whether there's any evidence of discrimination or not. The fact is that in hard economic times people start people start protecting what they have and any country that doesn't start being a bit protectionist will only lose to all the others that do and you can guarantee that most will become more so. We'll only lose if we don't.
What will make the difference? 7:18pm on 13 Jan 2009 Rather than handing more money to the banks for them to promptly issue as bonuses or dividends, how about having the government offer loans directly to businesses at a competitive rate? Perhaps that will motivate the banks to stop contemplating their own navels.
2008: The Brown rollercoaster 7:13pm on 21 Dec 2008 You know based on the comments here, where I've seen the odd one or two supporting Brown and the rest condemning him, I'm finding it hard to reconcile these comments with the polls that say things are close between Labour and the Tories.

Major was booted out because he inherited a then dysfunctional party that could be held to ransom so regularly by rebels due to a very slim majority. With that in mind it's quite remarkable that he achieved as much as he did, including successfully managing a very dicey economic moment largely bought about by opposition pressure to join the ERM.

I'd be surprised if Brown could achieve anything like that in the same circumstances.

You reminded me, I heard someone exclaiming over something the other day. The exclamation was 'Gordon almighty'!

Perhaps we should trust in Gordon - nobody can deny that he works in mysterious ways! ;-)

It's so nice to see the small state argument being considered again. Hallelujah. Couple that with a serious strategic shift away from financial services and back to real production, the only real way to generate wealth (as China has worked out very successfully), and the UK might yet get itself back into the game.

If the UK scrapes through this recession without a total collapse, but doesn't rethink it's dependence on the smoke and mirrors world of banking, then the next time the situation will be that much more likely to be irretrievable.
2008: The Brown rollercoaster 7:07pm on 19 Dec 2008 I'm really sick of Labour's line of the economic climate being 'out of our control'. This crisis would not be anywhere near as serious if a)individual debts has not been allowed to reach 3 times GDP and b)money had not been wasted on stupid ideas like tax credits where it would have been cheaper just to cut the basic rate of income tax and save a lot of uneccessary admin.

Brown's attitude reminds me of the man who went to MacDonalds, spilt coffee on himself and sued them because it didn't have a label saying 'hot'.
'Shovel ready' schemes 10:16am on 19 Dec 2008 Why does everyone still keep on presenting burrowing as the solution? Reckless lending and burrowing has created this mess and somehow they think it can be solved with more burrowing.
