A whole lotto projects 11:42pm on 19 Nov 2009 All well and good, but what was government expenditure on historic building grants and woodland upkeep and endangered species before the lottery, and what happened to it after the lottery? If lottery funds have replaced government expenditure then isn't the lottery just another tax, this one being levied mostly on the poor?
A return to reason? 7:57pm on 19 Nov 2009 Can I meekly suggest that the ACMD take the opportunity of being on the selection panel for the chair to invite Prof Nutt to apply for his old job again, making it clear publicly that they back him.

Trams off the rails? 11:38am on 01 Oct 2009 Like many other people in Edinburgh, while regretting the combination of mismanagement and bad luck which has dogged the trams scheme, I am looking forward to the positive impact it will have on our city, and want to see this initial investment built upon, not thrown away. The proposed line 3, which would link the south of the city and the Royal Infirmary with line 1, will be cheaper to build and have a greater impact. The danger is that the political ill-will that has been generated during the construction phase will sour the project for a long time. For the good of our city I hope that won't be the case. We have had precious little investment in public transport in Edinburgh for many years. Trams can and will work well for our city.
Speaking with confidence 11:49am on 19 May 2009 Bang on Brian. After the demonstrable success of scapegoating Fred Goodwin for the banking crisis, MPs are reusing the strategy for the expenses crisis, and Michael Martin is in the firing line.

I have to say that before he became speaker I found plenty of faults with his politics, but since his election he has been constrained by that position as all speakers are, and has handled the role quite effectively. He had an impossible act to follow, and was always going to be judged harshly, but he has been forced out merely as a scapegoat, and that says everything we need to know about the present House of Commons.

Personally I care less about the money - it's all piffling in the grand scheme of things - than about the quality of the people. And there is only one set of people truly responsible for that: the electorate.

Mike Russell's argument, like that of most of the SNP, requires time travel for it to work. He wants us to go back to the 70s, become independent, start an oil fund, and then restrict our economic growth through the boom years of the 80s by having a far more restrictive financial regulation system than London. And people actually buy that? What would have happened to Scotland's financial services industry in that circumstance? We wouldn't have had it!

Lend me a Fifer 3:18pm on 02 Apr 2009 I can appreciate that you might have got it from the BBC's own, erroneous, reports, but talk of "broken glass of the Royal Bank of Scotland headquarters" is nonsense. The RBS office which had a couple of windows smashed yesterday was not its HQ, nor anywhere near its HQ. It was just one of hundreds of RBS offices.

There is a strange groupthink in journalistic circles, exhibited here, which adopts the Bill Jamieson HBoS story - the idea that before the recent takeover by Lloyds, HBoS was a proud, ancient, Scottish company.

The honest truth, surely, is that the Bank of Scotland was taken over by the Halifax several years ago, and at that point became no more Scottish than the NatWest. In truth, since TSB has its roots in Scotland, if anything the bank has become more Scottish rather than less.

There seems a strange insistence among Scottish journalists to paint the recent demise of HBoS as being the end of the Scottish story; in truth the end came in 2001, and the rest is just a mixture of hubris and political spin.
Freethinkers welcome! 09:33am on 21 Jan 2009 Chary8, the problem is that many others choose to put their faith in "God" with no consideration at all - except that that is what their families have always done, and they feel safer to think there is some great sky-god looking down on them.

Thought is truly the opposite of faith. Faith is designed to replace thought with unthinking loyalty to the tribe.

Perhaps in another 40 years we will see a proudly atheist president taking the inaugural oath. That would truly be a momentous step forward for your country.
Queues or no queues 1:44pm on 22 Sep 2008 @ilostmoney - You have my sympathy and every right to be angry, but you should direct your ire more appropriately. The two specific groups of people you should be blaming are 1. the ones who insisted on queuing up and causing a run on Northern Rock without good reason, and more importantly 2. the administrators of your pension fund, who were criminally negligent to invest your entire retirement fund in a single stock. I've never heard of such idiocy. Name and shame them.
UK news coverage 3:21pm on 11 Jun 2008 How apposite - on the same page which links to this blog, a headline story is running about unemployment rising in the UK; but the story completely fails to note that the same figures show unemployment has in fact fallen in Scotland to a record low - fewer people out of work than ever.
