Not so special? 11:12am on 24 Sep 2009 Speak with an English accent in America and you're mobbed by 'fans' telling you how much they love the English accent and the English. Blog on an American blog, a GOP blog in particular, and sooner or later the Americans will be calling you 'cousin'.

Obama's beef is with Brown: the PM who betrayed the US over al Megrahi on the eve of the 9/11 anniversary. From America and Obama's perspective, Brown stabbed America in the back over this and at a time when Obama was giving Brown quite a lot of active support in a vain attempt to prop up Brown's electoral chances. Brown chose the worse possible time for his betrayal too, just as Obama's popularity is declining in the polls and Americans were preparing 9/11 commemoration ceremonies.

Lockerbie is inextricably linked to 9/11 in the American consciousness, both outrages continue to have massive impact in the US. Couple Brown's betrayal with Obama's new realism: he's twigged that Brown's a dead man walking and that Cameron is the man.

So, t's all too easy to see why Brown is being snubbed: Obama has stopped backing the loser. Obama knows that Cameron deplores al Megrahi's release and would have let him rot/die in prison.

The special relationship will be resurrected once Cameron is in number 10 and will become even stronger if, as some are forecasting, Obama's haemorrhaging popularity results in just one term of office for him and the Democrats.
Count it, don't follow it 11:51am on 25 May 2009 "David Cameron could be spending his allowance on underground swimming pools and platinum cycle helmets. All we know is that he has utility bills and mortgage interest to pay of more than £20,000 a year."

Stephanie, I believe you have misrepresented David Cameron's special family circumstances and resultant special housing requirements in this article.

Accustomed as we are to such occasional errors by the BBC, is it not more than a little disingenuous for the BBC's economist and Economics editor to treat Cameron's position as equivalent to that of most other MPs when it so clearly was not?

Why is there no mention of the Cameron family's special housing needs in this article?

Why, when you attacked David Cameron's mortgage claim did you fail to mention that he required a larger than average home, specially adapted to accommodate the special needs of his severely disabled son, Ivan, including a unit for his son and his carers and nurses?

I've read - on BBC News online! - that Ivan needed 24 hour, day and night care and that Cameron and his wife and other carers slept in Ivan's rooms, which were part treatment suite, part bedroom and play room. The BBC's report of Ivan's recent sad death:

"Mr Cameron is expected to return to Westminster early next week. The family faces a difficult return to the London home they had extensively adapted to help them to care for Ivan."

I believe you owe David Cameron an apology.
Beware the City merry-go-round 00:17am on 13 Feb 2009 Look at Gordon's hands while he's claiming that he knew nothing about nothing, Nick.

Time and again Brown reverts to his painful 'prayer' form of hand clasps, the ones he sought refuge in so many times at the despatch box and in so many speeches, until he somehow conditioned himself not to do this any longer. Yet today that conditioning broke down.

Brown's hands repeatedly clasped each other tightly, in precisely the same, knuckle whitening manner:

The Hands clasp like clam shells, the thumbs bending at the knuckles to
construct precisely the same angle each time, and to meet at exactly the same point, thereby forming precisely the same, physically unattainable triangles

Once the desired form is achieved, the thumbs dig into each other, as hard and painfully as Brown's practiced opponens pollicis muscles will allow; until his hands become so numb that he can no longer feel the excrutiating moral pain of his own conscience.
Unfair? We may have to hope so 5:05pm on 09 Feb 2009 What savers are about to do may seem very unfair too, Stephanie, but the government's and compulsive debtors' profligacy and disdain for us leaves us with no choice.

This is the scenario you failed to mention, that savers get the right hump about being forced to carry the feckless...and begin withdrawing our savings en masse to demonstrate that we are not as powerless as you imagine.
One year on... 4:36pm on 27 Jun 2008 The excellent blog of Shadow culture minister, Jeremy Hunt, characterises Brown as a tragic Hamlet. And there's more than a grain of truth in that analogy.

Brown - a jinx according Guido - appears to be Hamlet's alter ego in so many respects; as haunted by the subconscious demands of his domineering family, the compulsion for revenge and the accursed fate he's too weak to escape..

Hunt's blog provides a fascinating peep behind the curtain of both the shadow cabinet and the subconscious forces that drive David Cameron.

Following Mark Lawson's speculation about which Shakespearian character David Cameron would be, Hunt asked for Cameron's opinion at a shadow cabinet meeting:

"Prince Hal of course," he said - and then went on to suggest which member of the Shadow Cabinet was Falstaff."

Hal, the one nation unifier, who, following a wild and virtually criminal youth, grew into a great leader who restored the English language and beat the French.

No worries there then.

In mourning 6:44pm on 17 Jun 2008 Bush and Blair have also greatly exacerbated the security risk to their countries with their sickening illegal invasion of Iraq.

Yet there they both are, safe as houses, given the sort of financial rewards and security protection that the rest of us couldn't even dream of.

I'll tell you a story about Pres. Bush, Nick. His ancestors come from Messing, the same pin drop quiet, one horse village in deepest Essex that some of my family came from.

A few years ago when Bush was on a prior visit to England, a black, stretch limosine pulled up outside the Queen's Head pub, Messing one day, and in sashayed two flipping great blokes with bulges at the hip and dark glasses.

"Can I ask you, where's the castle, m'am", said one of these guys.

"oh, baint no castle 'ere moi darlin", she replied, then added with a knowing smile, "You be Yanks, yeah?"

"what're you dooin' in Massin', then? You sure you aint a lookin' fer Colchester, they got a castle? Or Leeyer Marney, thas a bit loik one?"

The two guys made a hasty exit however, before their limo screeched away in a cloud of dust, tyres burning, one was heard to say into a radio:

"We godda divert him, Moid, no way is this place s'cure enuff: no castle, no moat, no Lords, no Ladies - zilch! And the people here are like g**am half breeds, they don' even speak English!"
In mourning 6:17pm on 17 Jun 2008 I will miss him...because he gives great news conference.

So did Hitler, but we don't miss him, do we? Ok,bad joke, but how could you miss that war criminal? He and that other war criminal, Blair, were responsible for the slaughter and maiming of 100,000s of innocents in Iraq alone.

Bush and Blair must never be allowed for forget that.
Whoops-a-daisy 11:18pm on 05 Jun 2008 Yet another politician behaving more like a lager lout than a member of one of the most privileged classes in UK.

Will Chichester keep his hefty pension? I bet he will. Perhaps politicians caught with their hands in the public purse should lose their entitlement to taxpayer funded, golden pension pots?

At least he had the decency to resign, though I suspect it was a case of go before you're shoved. Good riddance.
