More statistical fury 11:36am on 19 Jan 2009 I'm sorry, but post #5 and all praising it are being incredibly short sighted.

What damage can they cause? Well, they can misrepresent, cherry pick and make stuff up to come up with highly popular policies that are based on lies and invention until they are elected by a landslide.

Then, of course, being government, they can continue this policy and "bankrupt the country", although of course everyone will be bewailing the fact the the figures no-one checked before they were elected actually match up.

Meanwhile of course, Labour can make stuff up safe in the knowledge that no one checks the opposition's figures and claims, until they are elected straight back in.

And so on.

Any party whether in power or with pretensions to power should have exactly the same degree of scrutiny, and Mark is bang on for mentioning it.
Wikipedia is censored 10:34am on 08 Dec 2008 It might be a fascinating case indeed, but it's not going to shed any light on anything if you treat it as a black and white two sided issue. It is not the "tireless child protectors vs the paranoid amoral libertarians" as your final paragraph seems to imply.

Blocking an entire article on a band because one of their album covers is distasteful? That's common sense? That's going to protect children, is it?

It seems these days that if you want to do something ill-thought out and dumb all you have to do is say "it's for the children" and anyone who disagrees with your idiotic plan will be branded a pervert.

Brixton has had a bad rep for years and years. No-one is saying that there is no crime anywhere anymore.

I was mugged in 1997 and haven't experienced any crime since. Therefore crime must have gone down 100% since 1997, yes?

Anecdotal evidence is useless. WHY should "the police" have some amazing insight into the nationwide problem? Which police? Police in Wythenshawe? Royal Tunbridge Wells?

The only way of actually getting an overview is with statistics. So the models are flawed. Big surprise. They are still better than claiming that crime has gone up massively because you and a couple of people you know were mugged this year.

None of the others have as soft pages. Nowhere near as good in a credit crunch.

I'm saving even more money by just drinking unfiltered tap water. This isn't Uzbekistan.
