john greenhill's, number 46, is an oversimplification.

The soldier's life is, as has been mentioned, well structured and disciplined. Life outside is an alien environment. Many ex-soldiers cope well. Some of those who do not cope are those who rely on being told, and need to be told, what to do. It isn't everyone who is able to cope in life without strict discipline, whether they have been in a military organisation or not.

A further observation is that many recruits are youngsters, who, at the time of their recruitment, have few, if any, academic achievments.
The same people who industry at large has nothing to offer them because they have nothing to offer industry.
When they come out of the army they still have nothing to offer. Whatever they may have learnt in the army has little or no application outside.
Whether or not it is feasible I do not know, but it seems to me that schooling which was iterrupted or even absent before recruitment could (should?) be continued in the army.
