Wednesday 21 October 2009 8:42pm on 22 Oct 2009 I'd like to congratulate Nick Ferrari & Tim Lott on voicing the unsayable truths about what white working people are thinking. The indigenous, historical people of this nation, our heritage, our parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and beyond who raised and taught to us the values that pass for British'ness - it is these as well that have been betrayed.

It was clear that although the Minister knew something about the issues that Rob Berkeley had no ideas about the subject matter and was totally at a loss. All that his discussions around the article could do were roll out the same, tied out cliche responses like more education, better housing etc etc. It was very clear that the whole debate had escaped him and that he was desperately playing 'catch-up' - and failing!

It's not just about education & housing - it's about our culture - not the 'multi-culture' but the British Culture. The one that the people of this country has been opined to apologise for during the past post-war decades, especially since the 'term' racist became a bludgeon used by the liberal elite to devalue any sense of Britishness or national pride held by anyone other than people who were like themselves and who weren't forced to live with the results of their policies.

Most white working people are not racist - nor are they bigots, notwithstanding a small vocal minority of extremists and they can be found in any class or culture; it is unfortunate that the BNP will profit from the disaffection that white working people have towards the political classes however maybe some shock tactics and a 'rump' of BNP MPs will force them to confront the issues instead of trying to offset their responsibilities by blaming white working people for how they see the world.
The Irish vote 'Yes' 1:58pm on 03 Oct 2009 Finally some common sense; at least the cold light of day (and the lack of money in their pockets) forced the Irish to see sense and look at the larger picture rather than just their own perochial needs.

..the Tories will be spitting blood - and Angela Merkel will be smugly working out her strategy with her centre right allies whilst Cameron and his cronies must be asking themselves why they allowed themselves to turn their back on the decision makers in Europe in favour of a nasty little grouping of Holocaust deniers, homophobes and racists.

Blair for President? 3:00pm on 02 Oct 2009 Well the old fogies who generally inhabit the blog and 'have yr say' areas of these sites are at it again. It's all about how bad Tony Blair was, the war, how he supported the Americans blah blah. The underlying narrative being how better life will be with the 'Tories back in; heaven help us if they do - we'll be back to having people queueing up in hospital casualty depts and dying on trolleys again in no time; cuts for the services that ordinary people rely on (of course those with private health care need not worry!). All of the traditional Tory complainents of a type that lurk around BBC comment areas are are here lining up to rubbish anyone who isn't anti-Europe, pro-Churchillian values etc etc.

Personally, I and many of my generation (I'm a 70's child myself) saw Tony Blair as a real break with the past and he turned out to be one of the most competent and capable politicians that the UK has produced for a generation - maybe that's why the Tories and the 'Right' in general are so scared of him still.

If anyone really believes that a Tory government wouldn't have gone to war with the Americans and only Blair did then they're really lying to themselves; those old Churchillian/Thatcherite values would've seen John Major (or whoever led them) carrying the lead, let alone trotting alongside George Bush. It's plain delusion to believe otherwise.

No, I believe - as do many (who don't even bother blogging here anymore) that Blair will make the post of European President zing! He's totally comfortable with the politics of the world and if anyone knows how the world words Mr 'ChristoperGill' then its the man who let the UK for 10 years, who is 'The Quartet's' chosen man in the Middle East and who likely has his fingers deftly on a personal address book in his Blackberry of the mobile phone number of every leader in the world. He would do Europe proud.
Monday 21 September 2009 03:39am on 22 Sep 2009 Oh dear, Spike Lee is a man with a chip on his shoulder and the view that any criticism of 'his man' is necessarily racist. His daft attempt to slam Paxman's question about what was it about the policy attacks that was racist fell on stony ground and all Lee could do was pretend offence. So Spike - just because you feel it was racist means that it is eh? It all sounded like the worst politically correct linguistic excesses of a cringingly worthy Lib-Dem council somehow to me. So I can conseign Mr Lee to the Inbox marked 'biased, angry man (black) with issues' as opposed to 'biased, angry man (white) with issues ok?

As for the Pollster - will someone please tell him that he isn't on the Obama campaign trail anymore, and that "Change" is just another word not a reason in itself and unlike the American voter we want to know what it really means before we vote for it. Also, please, please, the number of times I've heard people in the forums say something like "oh I wish we could have Obama here", deftly edited only gives credence to the Pollster's clearly limited understanding of politcs seen without the prism of the Obama campaign to enable him to identify with it. Of course people will like Obama if the Pollster keeps making the association between him and positive change - it's a no brainer. People wouldn't vote for negative change. Ditch this Pollster and get someone who can do the job - the previous guy did fine. This one - not.

Newsnight Review Friday 8 May 2009 00:18am on 09 May 2009 For God's sake is is really necessary to have someone as out of touch with modern life as Tom Paulin so obviously is commenting on the new Star Trek movie, probably one of the sci-fi events of the last 5 years?

What in the name of all that's holy possesses the producers of Review to week after week wheel out these pretentious, snotty old fossils who seem to have no idea about anything existing in the modern world other than what appeals to their own urbane sense of pomposity? Horowitz wrote kids books and drama for TV and Paulin is an Irish poet and literature guru - what are they doing critiquing a block buster Sci-Fi movie?

For the record Review, Sci-Fi isn't some nasty, dingy little backwater of fiction read and watched only by spotty young hooded urchins who can't differentiate between their Tiberius or their Nero thank you Tom - and they deserve far, far more from Review than to be treated to the spectacle of poor Natalie Haynes being totally lost between two other reviewers who were so full of their own obvious artistic superiority and self importance that it left her alone and with nobody to discuss the movie with. In short the entire spot was a gimmick and an insult to the millions of people who will pay more money to watch the Star Trek movie in a week than any set of egoistic worthy poets' and drama writers reading in a dark corner will earn in several lifetimes.

Review manages to pull in informed, educated opinion on more traditionally perceived cerebral art-forms like poetry, literature, painting, exhibitions 'et al' ad nauseaum; - week after week these self perceived 'higher brows' elucidate and inform us lesser mortals about how worthy this author is, how stirring this piece of theatre was - everything is so 'daahling'. But when it comes to something that dare I say an ordinary, less bourgeois person might want to go and see then it's treated with disrespect, condescension and laughed at.

So, over to you Review - or are you content to be seen as elitist as you sound?
What spending would you cut? 6:37pm on 24 Apr 2009 I thought that the whole point of the stimulus was to follow Obama's model and invest in infrastructure - not cut it?

But, as for projects that ought to go: ID Cards - consolidate the passport, drivers' licence and ID card into one - savings almost immediately!

Cut the budget for Scotland - if Alex Salmond thinks he can do better then let him.

Stop investing in rich peoples' interests like the banks and concentrate on investing in the small businesses and British Industry again.

Do not emulate Thatcher and Major and cut the NHS - it has taken decades for it to begin to recover - this mustn't be allowed to happen again.
TOBY'S BLOG: CREATING THE NEW SERIES 03:26am on 12 Feb 2009 It's great - we're both truly hooked. It's got a lot of depth and albeit the black comedic moments the whole atmosphere of the show reeks of the dark suppressed terror of the fates that might yet befall our heroes and the nightmares that are their lives already - it's truly leading us both in and we won't miss a moment. Quality entertainment guys - keep it up - please...!!
Humbling of our banks 9:21pm on 12 Oct 2008 It is with a distinct sense of schedenfraude that at the same time I find myself gloating over the end of Thatcherism (and glory at the sight of all of the old Tories on RP's HYS going purple with rage as the chickens come home to roost and they try and blame everyone else but the cause), I have a feeling of dread deep in my bones for what is almost certainly to follow. If there was ever a good reason to remember where the Tories ultimately got us this is it; remember that when the stories of breadwinners losing their homes, their families, their souls and their futures start appearing in the media. I wonder if the old guard will bluster so much then?
End of an era 9:57pm on 07 Oct 2008 The end of the era of Thatcher and Reagan eh; oh I hear the old Tory cry of "you can't buck the market" once used as a scythe again the Labour party being consigned to the history books...! Good and its about time we learnt this lesson!!

Maybe now the Western anglo-saxon democracies can learn the value of supporting the interests of all of their peoples instead of just those earning millions of dollars and pounds. Wouldn't it be great if ordinary working people didn't have to labour longer hours and for less money just to keep the FTSE watchers and rich shareholders happy.
