Putting Afghanistan in the driving seat 4:14pm on 01 Oct 2009 It's funny that MarcusAureliusII complains about the inability of Brit's to read in a post full of spelling errors. I also wonder why he is so keen on the war in Afghanistan when the 9/11 attacks were carried out by Saudis. Maybe it is because those Saudis (and of course, specifically, the Bin Ladens) are good friends of Mr Bush and his cronies.
Map of the Week: Why Costa Rica is the happiest place 09:15am on 10 Jul 2009 I can well believe that the Costa Ricans are the happiest people. I spent a couple of weeks there and found the people friendly, laid back and well educated. They disbanded their military many years ago and invested in healthcare and education and have one of highest rates of literacy in the world. The government works actively to protect the environment in a country with the most diverse habitats in the world. They have a great climate and a beautiful country. I'd love to emigrate there.
Palin disaster, Powell endorsement 1:26pm on 20 Oct 2008 I wonder what government BraunSA has been living under for the last 8 years. He seems to be in favour of a government that hands taxpayers' dollars directly to Wall Street and China, rather than a government that will do something constructive with them.

I grew up without a TV in my bedroom (there were only 3 TV channels for most of my youth anyway), no video games or computers, no DVDs or MP3 players. We lived in the middle of nowhere with no scout groups or youth clubs, yet I didn't go out and hang around on street corners or commit crime. So why do youths today need clubs with "all the tech that is desired"? I earned my pocket money by doing the washing up every night, vacuuming the house and mowing the lawn. From the age of 14 I got summer jobs. Kids need to learn about responsibilities, not rights.

They're not, and nowhere in the article does it say they are, so further discussion is pretty pointless.
Twitter, Qik, Flip - how to cover news? 09:04am on 11 Sep 2008 I have defended the BBC's coverage of Apple events on these blogs previously, but coming from the Technology page, where apparently 'Apple unveils "thinnest iPod yet"' was top story on both Tuesday and Wednesday (the same story is actually linked 3 times on the Technology page) and there is a video article on the new iPod, only to find that this blog is thinly disguised hype for the same event. Given that the story was "not a major story" I wonder why it is given so much coverage by the BBC?
The economist's guide to the hitchhiker 12:10pm on 14 Aug 2008 I hitched occasionally in the 80's and 90's, including hitching from Ancona in Northern Italy to Sheffield, via Amsterdam and Denver, Colorado to New York. I'm not sure that 20 minutes on the side of the road counts as a "long weight". I met many great poeple along the way.

I think one of the biggest reasons for the demise in hitching is the rise in low cost travel. Perhaps not low cost airlines or the train, but low cost coach services make the money saved by hitching minimal.
Waste not, shop not 3:36pm on 05 Aug 2008 We had milk in bags in Worcester in the 80's and I suspect before then, it's nothing new.

When did we (the UK) become such a wasteful society? Be it plastic waste, food waste, making pointless car journeys or wasting electricity in the home, where did it all start?

My parents (in their late 60's) seem to understand the need to cutdown waste, but don't see it as their problem. They have 2 TVs, 2 fridges, 2 cars, 2 long haul holidays a year. Their kitchen, lounge and dining room are all lit by large numbers of incandescent light bulbs (at least 6 in each room). They leave all their electrical goods on standby all the time and can't see why this is wrong. The only way they seem to understand the message is when I point out that their own parents were never so wasteful. They would have switched the TV off at the socket (and probably unplugged it too), and only had the required lights turned on. They would have laughed at the thought of 2 fridges.

So where did these wasteful generations come from?
A divisive Davis? 12:00pm on 13 Jun 2008 I'm confused. Who does David Davis think he is representing? Most of the Conservatives I know think locking up suspected terrorists for 42 days is a brilliant idea, in fact I'm sure they would extend it to locking up suspected benefits cheats, illegal immigrants and hoody wearers given half the chance.

Obviously they are a bit concerned that they seem to be siding with Labour on this, but they're not too worried because given enough time they think the law could be extended to locking up suspected Socialists for 42 days also.
Too much iPhone? 6:50pm on 10 Jun 2008 I didn't notice excessive coverage.

As for "[It's] NOT what I come to the BBC for." I don't come to the BBC for the tennis coverage or the news from Northern Ireland. I find the best way to not come to the BBC for something is to not click on the links that I don't come for.

This is the internet, not broadcast media, you have a choice as to what you view. The BBC provides such wide coverage I find it is the best site to not come to for all the things I am not interested in. In fact, it's so good I often discover new things that I don't come here for, but that doesn't mean that other people might not not not come here for them.
