They beat the Greens and picked up 4,000 votes although given the coverage that the BBC has offered the Greens you wouldn't think UKIP even existed.

Au contraire, vagueofgodalming. As an anti-federalist I congratulate Norway. They haven't handed over their country to the unrepresentative, unelected Comission and the Eurocrats. If they wish to be socialist, let them. It's their country.

I only wish that the three main political parties in the UK recognised the rights of UK citizens to a say in the direction of their country.

2009 is payback year 09:09am on 15 Dec 2008 Speaking as a member of the younger generation, who owes no debt (not even a mortgage) and has worked hard to save and pay taxes, I cannot object strongly enough to this mendacious plan to bail out one failing company after another.

There is no economic doctrine in the world that could possibly suggest that increasing the UK's already colossal debt is a good thing. The value of the pound is falling day after day and the UK is now seen as a credit risk.

If the UK goes bankrupt, everything we own will be lost. We must let these companies go to the wall. We urgently need some monetarist policy and a cut in the public sector spending.
Jam, Jerusalem and the fight against organised crime 09:14am on 26 Nov 2008 This is Harriet Harperson's personal crusade against prostitution. Forget what she claims about 'trafficked workers'. It's a smokescreen for her to push her particular values on the country, and ban prostitution. She's a modern feminist - interested in gender superiority and not equality - and backed, of course, by the Fawcett society, a militant feminist organisation which sees the evil hand of men behind everything.

Despite the Fawcett Society's and Harman's spurious claims, they have no proof to back up their claims that there are tens of thousands of trafficked prostitutes in the UK. This is a political crusade for ideological reasons.

We need to decriminalise prostitution, make it safe, and make it taxable. Sweden has just gone in completely the other direction (as a result of political pressure from their militant feminist movement) and the problems are now starting to surface - beatings, drug addictions, deaths, and the linking of prostitution to money laundering, drug dealing and petty crime.

I take it the PM program has missed the half-dozen articles in the Guardian and Independent about the marvellous effects of recession and how cleansing they are? How about this article from Prospect Magazine, that leading light of what's laughably called the 'progressive left', lauding the marvels of recession?

Of course, if it's the left-wing media telling us that being poor and out of work is good for us, that's OK, but if a Conservative politician says it, then, well, it's front-line news for the Today editors! Good job guys.
Giant borrowing payback looms 9:04pm on 21 Nov 2008 Well, I suppose it's verging on getting close to honesty, which is a minor miracle for a Labour chancellor. But dear God, is a 'sorry' all we get for a decade of blistering incompetence? If I'd run up debts owed to a bank over a decade, would I just say 'oops' and then ask for MORE?

I'm not sure whether you're aware but VAT is an EU competence. That means that the EU regulates whether the UK can alter its VAT. The only way that VAT could be raised is through a unanimous vote in the commission, which is almost impossible to achieve.

The Commission may, however, look to harmonise VAT rates as part of its glorious statist socialist agenda to make everywhere in Europe identical, so it may agree to an EU-wide 20% VAT. This, though, will take months.
