Banks can learn from retailers 12:00pm on 16 Sep 2009 "Well, a good starting point would be to remind ourselves why taxpayers in Europe and the US have bailed out the banks to the tune of $15bn, or more than $2,000 for every person on the planet."

Is that the right figures? There are 6bn ish people on the planet, so doesn't that make it $2.50 each? Or is the $15bn figure a British billion (i.e. a million million), rather than a US billion (a thousand million)?

Obviously this doesn't dilute the main point of the argument, with which I couldn't agree more, I'm just a pedant about numbers.
Carl Baker and Stockport - an example to us all 2:14pm on 15 Sep 2009 Not in the same league, but I had an experience watching Leicester in the FA Cup Quarter Final against Wycombe in 2001 that made me feel proud to be a football fan. We fully expected to win easily, but Leicester were poor, and Wycombe played out of their skins. Roy Esahdoh scored their winner late in extra time, after being signed (I believe) after Sanchez saw an advert for his services on Ceefax. A fairy tale ending. At the end of the game I, along with half the home fans, stayed behind to applaud the Wycombe players off the pitch. Sanchez had the decency to take a lap around the pitch acknowledging the Leicester fans. Travelling home down the M40, (I live in Southampton), the radio phone in was like a love in with Foxes fans ringing to say how deserved the Wycombe victory was, and Chairboys ringing to say how gracious Leicester were in defeat. A very strange day indeed.
BPI v ISPs - who's won on music piracy? 09:54am on 24 Jul 2008 Yet again the BPI completely misses the point. Rather than embracing new technology and working to create decent DRM free download services at a reasonable price they play bad cop and threaten to make ordinary members of the public into criminals, (yes I know that copying music is trictly speaking illegal, but we've all been doing it since the invention of cassette tapes).
When CD-Wow can provide a physical CD of an album for £6 including shipping (a CD that I am free to convert to MP3 and put on my iPod or stream to my internet radio) why would I want to pay more than that for a digital copy that limits what I do with the songs?
As I understand it the majority of the cost of a CD is for it's manufacture, so surely it is possible to provide download services at a reasonable cost, (say £2 an album), and still make the same profit. If I was risking a couple of quid for an album I might not like I wouldn't mind, but £8-10 a time is a bit steep.
You Are The Ref special 4:28pm on 10 Jun 2008 I really think we should drop the active / inactive offside bit. It seems a bit silly that a player sitting on his bum off the pitch is active, but a forward stood 10 feet from the player who scores the goal isn't. Go for the Brian Clough offside rule. "If you're not interfering with play what are you doing on the pitch". Any player who leaves the field of play should be considered active until the next break in play. So under this rule the Dutch goal would still have stood.
A lot easier and fairer I think.

Got the download today and listened to it twice whilst working. Good on the first listen, great on the second. Think it's a grower.
