Closing the News Multiscreen 4:27pm on 26 Oct 2009 I've used Multiscreen so rarely, I won't miss it. You can catch the headlines every 15 minutes anyway, so I never quite got the point of it.

HD is all very useful for those with a massive screen - the sort that only really fits in a hotel lounge - but when I watch our very standard sized widescreen from about 12' away, the freeview picture is absolutely fine.
What's the point of it, I guess, is the question.

If BBC3 and 4 bothered to advertise themselves on BBC1 and 2, they might get a few extra viewers - they need to do some desperate work on that one!
Relishing Schumacher's return 12:08pm on 04 Aug 2009 What is the fuss about? The teams all signed up to the in-season testing ban, fully aware of the implications. If Schumacher can't get up to scratch in a couple of practice sessions and falls outside of the qualifying times, that's simply tough.
Several have already mentioned it, but Alguersuari managed a decent time and wasn't trailing in four laps down as Hamilton crossed the finish line last week. If a complete newbie can do it, so can a seven-times champion.

He might have won 7 championships but the last two were probably the most boring years in F1 for decades. Watching race after race being the same makes for a repetitive, dull, 'switch TV off and mow the lawn' season.

This season has been the most exciting for several years, as two utter minnows of the F1 world have suddenly come into their own, whilst the giants have all but fallen off the circuit.

I said it before. Ferrari are panicking. They need a strong result, they haven't the foresight and nerve to bring in a fresh face - no wins after several races this season is not what their fans expect.
Relishing Schumacher's return 1:13pm on 30 Jul 2009 So are Ferrari running scared of a miserable year, of loosing sponsors? It begins to look that way if they resort to bringing back their previous driver rather than giving any one of the several new rising stars a chance.

Remember what happened when Schumacher himself broke his leg. Mika Salo was brought in (from the BAR team). Did them no harm!
Back-slapping 4:39pm on 20 May 2009 Too many MPs have messed their own back yards, to put it mildly.

Speaker Martin's resignation is probably the first honourable thing that has happened in a while, and Gordon Brown needs to take a lead from this and realise that to regain respect and trust, calling a General Election (soon) would be in the best interests of the country.

This is not a reflection on him, or his government, who I would trust over the Tories any day, but a reflection on the whole of Parliament. It might well be painful, but if the issue of trust and respect is not something to be repaired by simply rewriting rulebooks or making grand speeches, but by giving us, the electorate, the chance to offer judgement through the ballot box.....

Working in local government, I know this would not be allowed to happen, regardless of what #146 thinks! Any software used in the public sector should be regarded as business-critical.

If you cannot fix it inside of 24 hours yourself, get a contractor in who knows this kind of system back to front, who will not get distracted by any other calls on their time.
If the software is off-the-shelf, or bespoke from a company under support contract, they should have someone working on it. If its a hardware problem, a new server would surely have been installed and be running it by now - that only takes hours at worst.
Certainly the IT manager should be sitting (metaphorically) on the heads of the engineers and some kind of progress report that means something should be issued every day.
Remember, us license payers are the customers here!

Actually the facility of a 'disagree' button would allow a more balanced debate, as you then don't get a written counter-argument buried 5 pages down in the stack, and anyone who doesn't agree with the post can do so easily, thus balancing the rating.

A lot of newspapers run comments on the majority of their published articles, but these often turn into slanging matches and soapbox merchants muttering into their pint glasses about how dreadful the local council is.

Being able to comment directly on any news item would be great, with the recommend/disagree buttons alongside! How about it HYS mods?

You assume the BBC employs software developers to start with.

The fault could be software, or hardware. It could be a configuration issue, or problems with backup tapes not delivering. We don't need to know this, so long as it starts working again when its fixed!

iPlayer works absolutely fine, as far as I can tell, btw.

I hope, I really do, that you never come across something at your place of work that is wrong, that is against the good of the corporation - illegal, fraudulent - you know what I mean.
What would you do then?
