Cricket misses the point again 10:17am on 02 Sep 2009 1) Lancashire have previous here. Some years ago a championship match v Yorkshire was abandoned because the covers had not been effective. They had basically created pools as water leaked through a gap or something. It was a farce and robbed Yorkshire of a likely win.

2) I do tend to agree with those who say they'd rather have the refund than watch some farce of a match with spinners only, short run ups, one end, etc. Yes you can't get your petrol, hotel, time back...but that's the gamble you take with cricket.

3) Those who say 'don't have matches in the north' lack some basic knowledge. The wet/dry divide is much more west/east than North. Yes you're more likely to get rain in Manchester, but if cricket matches were always held at the place where rain is least liekly, they'd all be in the Atacama desert. The people of the NW love their cricket and deserve to have an international match (whether this is at OT is another matter - given my point #1).
Cast-iron uncertainties 09:27am on 01 Sep 2009 #13 I don't like Spurs but am a Huddlestone fan too. Reminds me a lot of Glenn Hoddle who is one of my favourite players of all time.

He just needs to keep his fitness in check and score a few more goals.

Smith tackles the big issues 4:43pm on 11 Feb 2009 my point is that the investigation should answer the question of WHY we're not as good as them. the accuracy of the statement is not in doubt.

#2's post simply states an obvious fact - "we're not good enough to compete", without offering any useful info such as why that might be. one would hope that the RFL investigation does not do the same.

#2: one would hope that the RFL's conclusion of the 'why are the Aussies better than us' investigation is not 'because we're not as good as them', which is what you seem to suggest it should be.

I've often thought Robert Peston was doing the work of two in your absence...but then I think he's enjoyed the limelight. He's a celebrity now.
Faith in banks 11:11am on 20 Jan 2009 Can someone explain one thing to me. If banks are desperate for cash i.e. to reduce their exposure to loans they've given to institutions like RBS, and they know that HMG has guaranteed to cover RBS's position, won't RBS's lenders simply all come knocking on RBS's door (effectively HMG's door) for their money?

Robert hints at this, but says it's an "unlikely event that a mob of overseas lenders to the banks all asked the teller one day for their money back."

I don't understand why it's so unlikely. But then I'm an outsider to this whole business and don't understand a lot of it (dont think i'm alone there). Can someone help me out?
Blues for Bush 11:10am on 09 Jan 2009 Firstly can we not avoid this descending into yet another climate change sceptic v believer battle? This is not the time nor the place.

Whilst the marine conservation measures should be applauded; in environmental terms, Bush will be remembered as the president who refused to sign Kyoto. Whatever the flaws of Kyoto, without doubt serious and numerous, surely it - at least - was a key step in showing a united will to tackle the GHG problem. Rather like Betamax and VHS, if you'll excuse the ridiculous analogy, an imperfect but united way forward is surely better than having factions pulling in different directions, as that simply hinders progress. Bush refused to sign Kyoto on the basis that it would damage the US economy. The US economy is in pieces. Whilst the two are not linked, it's hard not to smirk at that fact.
