Charging for online news 5:58pm on 06 Aug 2009 Oh well, I certainly won't be paying for any of the rubbish that NewsCorp spits out.

It certainly won't be missed from the few times I have clicked a link and ended up on one of those sites.

I really hope it backfires big time - just for the fun of laughing at how they'll spin it.

As a web server administrator I know that 'tracking users' is a very hard thing to do. The web is whats called 'stateless'. There isn't one connection for a page - there's several. There are several ISP's that route each 'request' through a different proxy so a single user could come through 20 or 30 (or more) IP addresses without the person knowing. Quite a few places I know of have dropped the 'required registration' as people just ignore it (or use bugmenot).

Add several other systems ISP's use and its gets harder. When people 'route' through other ways to get past country filters etc they it adds complications.

Users registration is doable but requires a lot of work and more servers/processing power (does that mean its less environmentally friendly so someone else can complain about that aspect[/sarcasm]).

I would like to be able to use iplayer when I move to the USA sometime next year - but I won't be able to (in theory). I do, however, understand the reasons behind it (copyright etc).

Again, welcome to you Paul - I don't envy your job. Whatever you do there will be people grinding an axe but thats the life of the BBC in general (you can't please everyone).

My major issue with the site as a whole is the speed. Ever since flash has been intergrated a lot more (not a bad thing on the whole) what ever browser (Firefox, Opera, IE) or OS (Windows, Mac, Solaris + other Unixes) I use, I'm always waiting for the page to finish loading the flash players.

And for the record - the weather site is so slow at loading I'm using a different site altogether.
Red Button Arcade 6:32pm on 25 Mar 2009 Nice - I like the idea of using it. A lot of important developments have come because a few people 'messed around'. It'll be interesting to see how it all develops.

Oh, and I was also one of those people who spent countless hours on an Acorn Electron with BASIC (and later a BBC B, Archimedes and RISC PC).

And I second the more important question. How has the highest Nibbler score (there was a version for the Acorn Electron if memory serves me correctly).
Home comforts for England stars 09:26am on 19 Mar 2009 Excellent - I like that idea. Better to have people playing in England than somewhere else.

Doesn't have to be a restraint of trade - its been made clear that the coaching team won't watch players who are 'overseas'. If there is someone just as good in England then play them.

Why get people to fly 'x' far to see someone who's playing in another country. Maybe they could say there're cutting down on their carbon emissions ;-)

I know there is a low graphics version but the speed of the site is important. I'm on a very fast network at work and on a 10Mbs connection at home.

The site is slowing down a lot - I'm all for such stuff like the embedded audio, but not at the reduction in page loading that I'm seeing. The page loads but its still a short time before I'm able to scroll the page or anything - it gets annoying.

Part of my job is creating webpages/web based systems. People who use them often comment on how fast they load.

If it does slow it down more then I'd rather you didn't. The BBC news website is getting slower and slower due to all the embedded flash your're using. Much more slower and I'll be looking elsewhere for news
Cold weather and a new look online 11:26pm on 04 Mar 2009 Looks okay - I have one issue. The site is now really slow to load.

In fact, its so slow I'm tending to look for the weather at another site which takes about 1/4 of the time to load.
Strictly Message Board: What Happened Update 8:58pm on 21 Nov 2008 I totally agree with what was done.

Option 1 is 'dangerous'. Turning off moderation would make a lot of things worse. The discussions would have got so heated that anything could happen.

Option 2, although a logicial thing to do from an administrators point of view would leave the BBC open to complaints about deleting messages and not letting people have their say (which is what a message board is for).

Option 3, not good - untrained people will work slower and will probably make a lot of mistakes as well as slow the moderators down with constant queries.

Option 3, best option. Close them and deal with the backlog. The situation doesn't get worse for the moderators and although people aren't able to post - they at least won't complain about the bigger mess that the other options could create.

Good call - I will now await people to disagree with me but thats my opinion.
Election Party! 9:43pm on 05 Nov 2008 Interesting - I liked how it all worked except for one really annoying problem.

The page now take quite a while to load with all the flash stuff etc. The BBC page was always one of the quickest to load but now its taking quite a long time.

It takes a while even at work, which on a very high speed connection.
