Arctic roots of 'upside-down' weather 11:13am on 06 Jan 2010 Good article - similar stories all over the blogosphere. However, it is rather astonishing that the NAO oscillation is suddenly making a comeback considering that this was pointed out decades ago prior to the whole AGW cataclysm. By the way are tou referring to Brynmawr ( Blaenau Gwent) or Bryn Mawr ( Penn.;USA) in your aticle? I can assure that the former was deep in snow last weekend with scenes reminiscent of the 1981/82 snows. The most important thing is that this whole debate is handed back to the cautious study of climataology, not the razzamatazz of the information revolution fuelled noughties, if that is not amixed metaphor. Happy New Year.
COP15: (No) Hopenhagen? 5:45pm on 19 Dec 2009 Many thanks for your hard work.Viewed from a distance, Hopenhagen came over as an overblown hubristic farce. Its result, a deal worth less than the useless Kyoto Protocol. What was most significant is that when the deal was stitched up to save face, neither the UK ( or EU) were involved. If ever one needed an example as to how far our stock with the rest of the world has fallen,here it is. Hopefully, after Christmas everyone can cool down, get to the bottom of Climategate which inevitably skewed proseedings ( probably deliberately) and the Science ( with a big S.

If Africa is to develop it needs to be given the ability to do so by free trade mechanisms rather than handouts, and the West needs to reindustrialize in order to produce as against buy post-carbon technology for the world without enough oil in 50 years time.

As a post script I thought the performance of the UK team was lamentable and Ed Miliband ought to be sacked, Brown will have his comeuppance in the new year whatever the complexion of the next UK government. "Flat Earthers" indeed.

Wednesday 16 December 2009 - in more detail 11:32pm on 16 Dec 2009 I'm very sorry not to join in with the jollity of Ethical Man, however I must complain about the physics that your so called expert employed in her experiment. She assumed that the atmosphere is literally a greenhouse with solid walls which insulate heat.In fact the so called "greenhouse effect" actually involves the selective release of rays through the atmosphere especially long wave radiation being reflected from the earth. Without it we would be an ice cube. The theory surrounds the increasing of this effect rather like a blanket on a bed. However your experiment did not release any of the energy it merely heated the contents of the bottle and the reaction of the CO2 at maximum effect. No one disputes that there is a greenhouse effect, however other experiments show that its effect does not increase in a linear progression and could well be quite samll. This part of the debate is open to learned discussion however fooling a bunch of neighbours by a magician's sleight of hand is unacceptable. Prof King was also unforthcoming over the possible melting of Greenland or Antarctica - aprocess which will take hundreds if not thousands of years even with massive climate change. Ethical Man - unscrupulous more like. I am not at all happy about this and am considering making a more formal complaint.

I do not have an answer and it is certainly not because woemen are shrinking violets. If there is a reason, speaking as someone who has worked all his professional life where women have been in the majority, it is that they do not generally like to challenge a consensus. Since the media portrays this as a consensus they fall into line. However, when the penny drops that both genders have been duped by simply the worst press corps, politicians and political activists in history they will rise in revolt. In Welsh history, Napoleon's army was stopped by the subterfuge of Jemima Nicholas in Fishguard. Beware the quiet women.

Schools and the Class War debate 3:51pm on 03 Dec 2009 With reference to today's latest debate on climate change. You stated that 1934 was the hottest year of the last century rather than 1998. This is incorrect, since 1934 was the hottest year in the USA not the whole world ( dust bowl etc). However, what was surprising was that neither David King nor Bjorn Lomborg picked you up on this well known factoid. This exemplifies,as cruelly exposed last evening by your buddy Maichael Portillo on the Moral Maze, that so called experts often lack a relevant background. However, thanks for bringing some sanity and balance to this debate on the BBC.
