Victory or heist at the Oval? 11:40am on 24 Aug 2009 The Oval pitch was prepared as a result pitch that provided both sides the chance. Not the best pitch. But if Australia had won the toss, batted first..they might have been in the driving seat

Australia's mistakes.

Not selecting a Specialist Spinner. As Warne states "You always must choose a specialist spinner for the Oval.

2) Clark..Clark is not the bowler he was. 10mph down on pace at 79mph didn't cause the batsmen problems. Double whammy.

Hauritz should have taken Clarks place; to combine with North.

3) 4 bowlers rather than 5. Without the class of Warne, McGarth..Australia were weaker bowling 4 than 5.

4) Other than Hauritz; I really feel for Lee, missing out on the Ashes, though injury in 3 tests/ overlooked in the last 2; despite been in form.
Flintoff a very English hero 09:38am on 24 Aug 2009 Botham was the better strike bowler with seam, surprise and swing; often taking 5fers (match winning wicket halls). Flintoff a difficult bowler to face often collecting 1-3 wickets per innings; but not a Glenn McGrath/Botham.

Botham's batting was more classic with better technique and footwork. If Botham had better inter innings preparation, his batting would have scored less early dismissals and more big scores.

Botham and Flintoff were both similar abilities as slip fielders and captains.

Trott gallops his way into England hearts 09:01am on 23 Aug 2009 The danger for England is that they bowl badly.

There is no room to bowl short, wide, down leg. Harmison should be taken off if he bowls short, lets easy runs away.

Bowl fast 90mph+ balls, pitched up on the off stump; just outside...let the batsman make the mistake to the length jumping ball. Change the pace of some pitched up balls with the slower ball.

Swann is key; but he will need to give the ball air, float it up and give the ball a rip.
Burnley high on emotion 3:03pm on 21 Aug 2009 As a Burnley fan I must say Robbie Blakes volley into to top right angle was beautiful and delightful to see. That is what fans go to watch football for.

Man Utd.. will come back..but the weak area is the midfield of Anderson, Park, Carrick...there is simply not enough creativity into the box ..to service to top strikers like Owen, Rooney, Berbatov..you can't expect these guys to peddle back into midfield to retreive the ball.

A wide, on the box edge provider is required. ala Beckham. Its not happening for Utd from midfield.

I totally agree with your England lineup.

England need to win, to take the Ashes; Australia can draw or win to go home happy!

To win, you need to take a few calculated risks; choose a few in form experienced additions. Ramps and Key. One off Test, different faces, new challenges for the Australian bowlers to work out. Not easy in one match, 2 innings.

The continuity, conservative direction will not work at the Oval.

Bell and Bopara are good players; England's future, but they have haven't added at this level, for this series. Time for more with the county.

The Oval does tend to suit spinners that bounce (panesar) and pace quicks. Swann is a better all round package than Panesar; but on this wicket Panesar's record is excellent and suites his bowling. Difficult choice. Two spinners? Unlikely after Cardiff. Who can get you wickets?

Otherwise, spot on with the choice.

Edgbaston 'aura' can lift England 12:38pm on 30 Jul 2009 BennyB..No I think the response was made by Strauss; when a response wasn't really needed to the Ozzy aura issue; Pointing didn't respond to it initially; and responded later, tit for tat, just stoking things.
