For Peat's Sake 3:15pm on 08 Jul 2009 I don't see any big contradition here. Most plants - probably more than 90% - will grow happily in good peat free compost. If a small proportion really only grow in peat - (and garden demand will be limited anyway because so few people can plant them out!) then that fits within the 10% anyway.

I run a small commercial nursery and use peat free compost for everything except a few shrubs. It's just a case of finding the right product.

As for feminine hygiene products - I don't think we're talking main supermarket brands, though the chemicals and energy used in their production are probably equally environmentally challenging.

In the good times we want the freedom to make the most of it.

What we actually need is more freedom in the bad times, to encourage invention and risk taking, and more regulation in the good times, to prevent excess. But we humans are bad at collective risk management. Nothing will change, ultimately.

Anything you did at Berryfields would have been removing or changing something done by others, with all the endless debate and risk of upsetting someone, somewhere, that would have entailed.

I never took to the Berryfileds as a venue for GW anyway - it was plainly unrepresentative of the day to day experience of most gardeners and always looked gloomy somehow. The additional facial lighting so often used seemed to make the backdrop look dark - perhaps they were just unlucky with the light levels on filming day!
Winter survivors 10:01pm on 19 Feb 2009 I've never got a Melianthus to reach 8ft here in balmy Cheshire - let alone flowering and setting seed!

Good to hear some less than hardy specimens have come through the frost and snow in the SW after the damage reported in the news last week.

I keep thinking about a fabulous visit I had to Heligan last year - I hope they didn't get hit too hard....
Digging again 2:27pm on 05 Feb 2009 I think it was Christopher Lloyd who said that the right time to do something is when you want to do it.

If everything is left to the perfect time to do it, then all the jobs mount up and all you need is one small problem just then to really throw you out for the year.

I don't think there is any harm in clearing soil and digging it over in mild spells in Jan/Feb. You can always warm the soil up with black fabric or something later on and anyway, the base heat of the ground (12C or so - the basis of ground source heat pumps) will soon warm any buried cold soil.

Not a good idea to dig in cold weather and then plant straight away of course, but with a good couple of months to go I'd do what Joe's doing and get stuck in!
Taxpayer support for big companies 10:20pm on 15 Jan 2009 My father's modest investment income has gone up in the past 3 months. Turns out he invested in bonds in funds that lend money to corporates. They now pay more interest so he gets a better return - currently 6-7%

Now, if we taxpayers get the same kind of return on loans to companies instead of the paltry returns on offer on the high street, then it seems like good business to me.

Made off with all our money 11:08pm on 19 Dec 2008 He only lost 1% of his substantial asset wealth - lucky bloke! He should be shrugging and counting his blessings. It doesn't help the rest of the economy if he acts as if he's on his uppers and liquidates his investments to protect them.

We're OK but not wealthy. We're having some building work done and buying a new kitchen - all locally manufactured and installed. If you've got a bit, get it spent. Keep valuable skills alive and good peoples' families solvent.

My front garden 5:08pm on 27 Nov 2008 Ah yes, the problem of the window cleaner's windows.....

My front garden is also the neighbourhood disgrace - overgrown shurubs, weeds galore and crumbling paving. Since the back garden is on public view for much of the year, this is where I have spent my time and energy, and the front has been ignored.

With builders knocking the house around I felt I had an excuse to leave it be - their skip lon the drive looks much worse than the garden! But in January the builders will go and the front garden's time will finally come.

No worries about bikes and bins, but we may have a clash of styles. I fancy something a bit contemporary, hubby fancies a traditional cottage garden. But since I'm the gardener.....
