English cricket's 'Premier League' revolution 08:34am on 12 Jul 2008 I can understand why people might be worried about all this, but there is successful precedent. What is now known as the Guinness Premiership in rugby union in this country has made for exciting finishes, open title battles, and a competitive national side. The mistake they made was allowing Premier Rugby sit alongside the RFU, in essence creating a deadlock as to the release of players to play in internationals. Provided the ECB retain ultimate power over the administration of the competition and the release of players for the international games, I don't see a problem.

For years, we've had people complaining that there's too many teams, too many matches, too many mediocre players clogging up the system. Someone comes up with an idea to change all of that, and then everyone tries to pick holes in it. It's all based on a successful model - all it needs is some TLC to make sure it doesn't evolve into the monster that the Premier League has become.

Pietersen did look like he was struggling to time the ball in the middle 15 overs. Also, his hundred today was his first in one day internationals in England, and his highest in 21 innings - dating back to last year's World Cup. I think Blofeld's comments are justified, because Pietersen himself would expect much more than that.

That said, it was an exceptionally mature innings - he could have gotten frustrated easily, and really put us in the mire at 90 odd for 4. Luckily, he rode it out, and really cashed in during the final 10.
Questions need answering over Champions League 9:46pm on 07 Jun 2008 As some have already mentioned, money talks. The reason the Pakistan team haven't been invited, I presume, is because they haven't been as keen in talks to expand the club game globally, and their board won't co-operate.

Where would this money go? For example, if, on the unlikely chance, an English team won the Champions League, would that team get all of the prize money? How would that affect competition in the domestic game? Surely if a British team won, donating a portion of that cash back to the ECB would benefit the domestic game as a whole - ensuring tough competition, as opposed to what's happened in football, where only a few sides can really compete for their nation's biggest prize.
Anderson shines for England 9:35pm on 06 Jun 2008 Anderson bowled beautifully today - he deserves his moment. I remember a few years back when Hoggard first broke into the side, and he was criticised because he could not adapt to conditions that did not suit his swing bowling. Anderson needs to do something similar, and become one of England's most valuable bowlers. He is dangerous in these conditions, but looks quite tame on flat decks.

Broad gets better and better with every spell he bowls. These type of matches are perfect for him - he is not under pressure to perform so highly when Sidebottom and Anderson are bowling so well, and his contribution with the bat meant we got a decent score this time round rather than a mediocre one. It's ridiculous that people are talking about the return of Simon Jones and Flintoff at this stage - neither of them have a place in a 4 man attack while their fitness is under such scrutiny. If you can include a fifth - promote Ambrose to 6, Flintoff at 7 - that may be a more viable option. But we seem pretty settled as a bowling unit as it stands.
Pietersen spares England's blushes 10:37pm on 05 Jun 2008 Posters typing about Chris Read should remember that Test cricket is more than just about ability. Read is doubtlessly a talented cricketer, the best keeper at county level and a handy batsman. So why has he found it so difficult to break into the Test team for any length of time?

He's been around the team a few times - perhaps it's an attitude problem, or that he doesn't react well under pressure. Either way, there's something about him that the selectors don't like, which is why they habitually go for players like Ambrose, Prior and Jones.

Pietersen was superb today, world class. Very disappointed by the rest of our supposed batsmen. I think it might be time for a Bopara, Key or Shah recall. Not Ramprakash, he's not even that high in the averages this year - they may as well bring back Graeme Hick.
