Microsoft: 'No bounce' 12:26pm on 05 Oct 2009 Our (small) company has noticed that a lot of projects that have been held for the last 6-9 months have started to come through now, so there is likely to be an increase in new business, but what has gone are the larger long-term orders and contracts that we used to see.

One good thing about any recession is that it does clear out a few of the 'marginal' companies that give low pricing to get the work, they are a PITA, especially when their customers expect that same low pricing from other suppliers.

What about the engine and aircraft system running checks that are carried out during the time between start-up and take-off? You either do those between leaving the gate and arriving at the take-up hold, or you sit at the hold and do them, you cannot just leap away into take-off without running those checks first.

With broadband at home and at work, we have no need to watch TV any more, and the Sunday Times is almost ready for the chop as we rarely read 50% of it.

TV programming in the UK is pretty awful, and the newspapers just don't have anything to appeal any more.

We 'lost' our TV during a roof rebuild over last Xmas, and although it didn't get back on until May of this year, we didn't miss it and having got out of the habit, it just gathers dust.

Not so good for the supplier chain though, there must be a lot of nail-biting going on in the second and third-tier suppliers.
Britain's media obsession 09:49am on 16 Jun 2009 The problem with the rest of us who 'do' have broadband, is how to get away from the screen!
But, it has been an invaluable tool for our small company, and the availability of instant look-up for data, news etc is priceless. I have just arranged for a pallet to go to Eire, all done online and one phone call to confirm. Never dealt with the transport company before, didn't know about them until I looked on the net this morning.
We first got involved in computers in 1982, and that was before internet access. We are in our 60's now, but find a fair bit of resistance amongst the elderly as they cannot grasp it at one sitting. That is what stops a lot of them getting online, fear of the unknown.
Should we trust the regulators? 09:50am on 15 Jun 2009 The problem is that the Governments need the financial institutions in place and making money, so they are not going to do the 'right' thing and formally reorganise the regulation of those institutions.

Until you break the Govt's financial dependency, you cannot reform the system.
Blavatnik offers Setanta lifeline 3:34pm on 12 Jun 2009 I cannot see the Pay-for-TV market expanding any time soon, and with the growth of Internet coverage, many folks are turning away from the 'deals' that BSkyB, Setanta and others offer, and keeping the weekly/monthly costs down.
Blavatnik might feel that there is an upside to the deal, but he may have a long wait.
BT: Self-inflicted wounds 11:33am on 14 May 2009 As with a previous poster's comments, we also find that BT offers a second-rate or 'below par' Broadband service but expects to get more than almost everyone else in charges.
We came out of contract earlier this year, since when we have had three calls from BT asking us to renew with a 'special price' offer, but that offer is still more money than deals from other providers.
If they supplied an 8mb service as advertised, and not the occasional 3.5mb that we get, we would be happy and renew, but until then we are looking elsewhere.
They really do act and perform like the old Post Office Telephones from whence they came.
