Spotting a red flag 06:43am on 10 Nov 2009 I think Major Hasan's act, an assassination from within, will trigger off massive homeland security issues for America, and knowing how this government slavishly follows American policies, expect further curtailments of civil liberties here.
As far as the war in Afghanistan goes it is the natural progression of opposition tactics. They only have to pull these stunts once for the wider implications to ripple down, ruinously expensive, for years. As we can see, so far, the last two wars this country has been involved with has nearly bankrupted us.
Benitez faces biggest test 11:22am on 21 Oct 2009 Having listened to Benitez's rambling incoherent dirges aka post match press conferences over the years I am totally baffled as to how the players are expected to understand what his intentions are.
I listened to last nights mumbled effort three times and I'm none the wiser.
Giggs is Manchester United's shining knight 1:18pm on 27 Sep 2009 Considering every season I have moaned about Giggs at one stage or another I suppose I have to admit defeat at last. He really has learnt the trade and proved himself.
On a slightly churlish note I do believe gongs should be given out a few years after retirement. Give him chance to cope with life after football before tagging him. I can't see him as a manager, too low key and besides it seems only ex players with something still to prove in the game that have the motivation for management.

Reasonable demand for dangerous people in one county going to work in another without recourse to shared police knowledge has long been a problem supposedly covered by shared databases. But how difficult was that in the face of the 'nanny state' and 'we are being watched' mentality ?
We want freedoms to be unmonitored and to have the rogue elements that have existed since the dawn of time noted. Okay, so we are asked to consider the possibilty that our own misgivings on an individual are superseded by checks that are passable with any amount of deception, thereby removing suspicions based on instinct to those wielding bits of paper stating 'fit for purpose'.
Expect at best minimal applications from those with nothing to hide but who object to snooping, others who may like a bit of a smoke at the weekends avoiding failure of a test that has nothing to do with perversion and an increase in offers from natural born deceivers bypassing a system that now removes all those who don't care to have their weekend foibles cripple their kind hearted midweek help.
The bum has finally bitten itself.

Britain and the bike: a bumpy ride 4:31pm on 21 May 2009 Somebody mention the potholes in our roads. This is clearly the main reason why people don't cycle in the UK. I've spent five years pursuing the local council over local roads and discovered they would spend their entire yearly budget in one week if they were any way serious about cycling either serious or leisure wise. I spend sixty percent of my ride looking down for lethal dips, scabbing and subsidence lesions in the tarmac and not at the traffi, most of which outweighs me.
Seriously one of the unnoticed scandals of our generation is that a majority of councils happily pay out more in compensation for car suspension than they do on maintenance.
The upshot of this is that few children are let out on our disgraceful highways to practice the extreme skills you need to survive even to get to school. Where on earth do you expect to find enough people to enjoy one of the best activities, in all it's forms, that they could ever do.
