The bottom line of this endeavour is to get people to watch. To build up a huge audience and thus to strengthen and revive the popularity of WI cricket.

How exactly is this million pound game going to do that? The stakes may be high for the players but why should the viewing public care in the slightest whether or not Pieterson's or Gayle's bank balance swells by £640,000?

The thrill of cricket, as with any sport, is in the glory for those the team represents. The World Cup is so important to fans because their team fights for their nation, for them. I don't think anyone cared what the Indian cricket team's win bonus was the last time they won? All that mattered was the glory of beating Pakistan in the final.

This rather embarrasing spectacle seems to me to be no more than a platform for a desperate attention seeking party boy billionaire to feed an ego the size of Bournemouth.

And at difficult financial times like these, outrageous acts of largesse such as this only serve to alienate the paying public and damage the game instead of enhancing it.

Man Utd should sell 'slave' Ronaldo 2:20pm on 11 Jul 2008 It is simply not about money anymore. It is not even about Ronaldo now. This is now a battle of prestige. Between arguably the 2 biggest clubs in the world; Manchester United and Real Madrid.

To lose their jewel player to Madrid would be a massive humilation to Utd and a real slap in the face to their assertions that they are the biggest club in the world.This would affect their prestige and standing in affluent markets such as the Far East and the rest of the globe.

When 2 lions face off, the one that loses is always diminished in the eyes of the watching pride.
Access granted? 12:32pm on 19 May 2008 The first comment above tells you everything you need to know about English arrogance. I am a Brit as well and support Utd. But this is the European cup, not a silly domestic bauble like the fizzy drinks cup won by Spurs or the FA Cup. I want to see teams from across all of Europe competing at a uniformly high level. To do this, uefa must emphasise the inclusivity of all European nations in the tournament. Having the final in Russia and in other east european nations in the future will help garner greater interest amongst those populations and demonstrate to all Europe that this is the European Cup and not the Western European Cup.

The beauty of European football lies intrinsically in the contest between contrasting footballing styles of different nations. I believe the monopoly of English, Spanish and Italian clubs is to the tournament's detriment. East Europeans are wonderfully technical players and have contributed much to the European Cup with great players and great teams of the past like Red Star Belgrade. Their decline in recent years has weakened this Cup. We need to promote football in less developed leagues and nations in Europe. This will ultimately help in creating more competitve teams around the whole continent which will further enhance the beauty and appeal of a tournament that I already believe represents the highest standard of football played by man.
