Carl Baker and Stockport - an example to us all 2:59pm on 14 Sep 2009 The loss of a loved one is never easy to overcome and seems to have been dealt with with great dignity by Stockport, Yeovil and the fans of both sides.

The ridiculous wages that players earn, and by association the directors of the blubs who started paying these ridiculous wages, have been consistnetly ripping the heart and soul out of football for the past 20 years. It is always refreshing to read a story, bad though the circumstances are, about a club that still maintains strong links with its fans, treating them as part of a wider community rather than an expendable resource, which happens at the higher end of the game.

Well done Stockport, Gary Ablett and all the fans who signed the card and may Michael Baker Rest In Peace.
Ghost of Owens inspires Bolt 12:23pm on 18 Aug 2009 The basis for most legal systems the world over is innocent till proven guilty. It's the reason that cheats of the past have been given gold medals which subsequently get re-issued to other athletes. For that reason alone, Bolt should be feted.

The physical size of the man is clearly the difference between him and other world class athletes as portrayed in another article on here. His leg length enables him to run the distance using far fewer strides than any other sprinted in history, and therefore, getting similar physical conditioning to the rest gives him, effectively, a head start.

Maybe this will be the start of a new wave of sprinters. Maybe the traditional domaine of the tall skinny West Indian will change from cricket to sprinting. Maybe more American giants will take to sprinting rather than basketball.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the physical form of an athlete can substantially influence the results achieved. A 6 feet 8 inch tall triple jumper will have much greater range than Jonathan Edwards ever had, and the day that such an athlete equals his speed and technical ability, his excellent triple jump record could be obliterated also.

Freak records happen cleanly in Athletics. They just do. Seb Coe's 800m record stood for years. Edwards triple jump record is seemingly out of reach currently. Radcliffe's marathon record is equally stratospheric.

There are also those records that are, rightly or wrongly, shrouded in suspicion: Flo-Jo's 100m record, Jarmila Kratochvilova's records to name but a few.

Bolt's record falls into the first category for me. Greater testing frequency with more accurate and detailed tests would surely have shown him up if he was cheating. A truly stunning performance. I can only imagine the ghost of Jesse Owens patrolling the Olympicstadion with a huge grin on his face.

At school I broke the 6th Form Shot Putt record which had stood for 13 years. My longest shot putt was longer than my longest legal javelin throw!
Clough times at Derby 3:09pm on 28 Jul 2009 I will settle for a step in the right direction this term, mid-table mediocrity being more than acceptable. Next year is when we need to kick on and I still believe Clough is the man. Here's hoping the aura around the man continues to grow throughout the season, and the signings arrive over the next 18 months to take us back where we belong.
The Watson Open 4:24pm on 20 Jul 2009 40 Majors since a UK winner, and that one was gift-wrapped by Monsieur Van de Velde.

What has happened to the so-called golden generation? Westwood? Donald? Casey? Poulter?

They are all talented golfers, no doubt, but there have to be serious questions about their mental strength.

They are about to be blown aside as a generation of serial under-achievers as the likes of McIlroy, McDowell, Fisher, Wilson and Wood wash them away.

I feel for Westwood and Donald. Nice guys the pair of them. I feel a little for Casey. Poulter though is fast becoming a pastiche who will be remembered more for his clothes than the quality of his golf

England get through with sheer guts 1:40pm on 09 Jun 2009 I am truly loving this tournament. I am a test cricket fan through and through, and have been to a game in all formats that we've seen, and this is certainly the way forward in the shorter version of the game.

I'm sorry, but One Day Internationals must go and now. The enormous difficulties faced by administrators keeping interest after the powerplays and before the final ten overs in the 50 over game amount to a losing battle.

Overkill is a dangerous thing obviously, and the rumoured 2nd IPL Window should be snuffed as soon as possible. However, the growth of the game at the very top level should be encouraged. There should be two games at International Level. Test Cricket and 20/20.

Instead of 50 Over games at International level, double-header 20/20 games should be held. Teams can be changed between the two games (one before tea, one after tea). Instead of 100 overs of cricket with 50 overs of nudge and nurdle, you have 80 overs of quality entertainment. For me there is no competition and this is definitely the way forward.

More surprises. Easier to get smaller nations involved. More action. More tension. More interest. The Dutch and Irish have shown this week that this is the way forward.

One Day International cricket should be put out to pasture forthwith, like an old donkey. We should look back over its high points with fondness, but not mourn its passing. Thanks for some great memories, but time has come to move on.
The alternative Six Nations awards 08:39am on 24 Mar 2009 Re Stephen Jones kick.

A 48 metre penalty after 20 minutes is one thing, but after 80 plus minutes of intense international rugby, your range is reduced.

What truly puzzled me was the Welsh's unanimous decision to just stop playing once they had the advantage. Ireland could well have panicked and conceded another penalty closer in if the Welsh had continued to drive close...
The alternative Six Nations awards 08:30am on 24 Mar 2009 I really don't get Gavin Henson. As a fly-falf/centre for years, I know a reasonable amount about the position and I fail to see what he offers.

You could throw in a non-team of the tournament:

Cross - poor fellow (he was the only Scotsman truly trying for those opening 25 minutes too)
Hartley - I miss the point with him I think
Castrogiovanni - the only thing he consistently did well was rubbing it in after the opposition conceded a penalty
Nallet (c) - major disappointment as player and captain
Hines - 57 varieties of mediocrity
Jones, R - played himself well out of Lions contention
Chabal - definitely not a 7
Powell - another Welsh disappointment (don't believe your own hype)
Bergamasco - say no more
Godman - apart fropm ten minutes against England he showed nothing
Williams, S - a real non-event of a tournament
Henson - over-hyped, over-rated
Jauzion - best centre in the world? un tournoi a oublier
Sackey - had a few good years but way down the pecking order now
Poitrenaud - back to the heady heights of the last minutes of THAT Heineken Cup Final

Coach: take your pick from Mallett, Lievremont, Hadden or even Gatland, who all made major bopobs at various times

Commentator: Jonathan Davies - I respect his knowledge and views on the game, but should not be allowed in the summarisers chair for Wales games as he is just too parochial. His justifiable anger at the aerial tackle by Cross contrasted sharply with his reaction when Byrne did the same thing against England - even Brian Moore is less biased, and that is saying something
