I thought the timing of the Abbey move to up mortgage rates was interesting and probably means Santander is not as strong financially as it may appear - any comments or City gossip on that?

Certainly the Spanish economy appears to be in deep trouble and of course Santander was part of the RBS ABN takeover disaster, so surely there is something going on here?

What concerns me, are the knock on effects these events will have.

Can you give any detail on what is happening to The Nationwide BS. It was mentioned initially as part of the bank bailout, but I've not seen any news since.

Does it need capital? does it need liquidity?

How can it raise capital when it can't give shares to the Treasury?

To all those ex-carpet baggers out there, I hope you are truly ashamed.

Many of our building societies are/were very old, with proud histories. I could never understand how the current members could claim all of the value of a Building Society which had been built up over decades. Morally it was wrong.

Put your savings into a building society and feel good about it.
