Should politicians be forced to give yes/no answers? 03:39am on 20 Oct 2009 ha ha...congratulations on censoring my earlier posting (#15). Let's be clear that I didn't use any foul or abusive language. I must be one of the few people who can easily rile the BBC with my comments. The truth hurts doesn't it, Auntie? Fact #1: Paxman did ask the same question 14 times and he did admit that he only did it because the next item was delayed. Fact #2: Tony Blair did not answer the question in parliament about the combined MMR jab for his youngest son, Leo at at time when his govt. was telling everyone it was safe. Go ahead, remove this posting as well. Let's see how many times you are going to censor me?
Biases, U-turns, and the BBC's climate coverage 11:31am on 15 Oct 2009 Finally, a BBC blog where the blogger replies and defends his position. Richard, if you do nothing else, can you please let Robinson, Peston et al. know that part of the responsibility of writing a blog is to read the replies, acknowledge mistakes and reply.
My view of this climate change bias debate is quite simple. All human beings have an opinion on things around us. The last time I checked, the BBC was made up of human beings. Ergo, the BBC cannot be totally impartial. If you asked say 300 BBC employees their opinion about climate change, not all 300 will say the same thing. This is entirely normal. If you asked 300 people to name their favourite football team, not all will say the same team. Again, this is normal.
So, my advice to the BBC is let people declare their biased view on any subject. As an organisation, the BBC does not need to have a view. If the BBC keep insisting that they are impartial, they will continue to get hammered. What compounds this is that you are funded by the TV tax-payer or license fee payer.
And if there is a contentious topic such as climate change and the evidence is not clear-cut, don't waste your time on it. The reason is that climate change is one of those topics which does not lend itself to short term,headline grabbing 24 hour news. You will constantly be chasing the headline grabbing reports while not being able to capture the long-term view. Of course, if the BBC is ready and willing to commission a programme that is going to dedicate itself to climate change and can promise that this programme will run for 50 years, then that would be great. But somehow I can't see that happening.
By all means cover the Copenhagen summit as just another new item and stop there. Let the experts have their say and stop there.
Of course, the other way is to become a full commercial channel like ITV,Channel 4,Channel 5, Sky and do whatever you want. Personally, I favour this so that I no longer need to pay for a TV licence when I'm using a TV just for my video game.
Where's ITV's Ball? 5:49pm on 15 Sep 2009 And this is relevant to the BBC's business editor? Why? How? The last time I checked, ITV was public company like many others listed on the FTSE. Are you going to write a blog when anyone of them looks for a new CEO? If you're that bored, why not quit the BBC and challenge James Murdoch to caged-boxing match. I'd pay to watch that! BTW, I presume you're over the nausea that you got when you read the report on the MG Rover collapse. I get nausea whenever you write a blog! Can you stop?
How did Phoenix Four do it? 3:17pm on 11 Sep 2009 Ho-Hum...It's a Friday and Robert appears to be bored. So we've spent £16 million to be told what we knew anyway. So, who brokered the deal between Phoenix & BMW? Answer: this government. And now they turn around and make all kinds of scurrilous accusations. As the old adage goes, tax evading is illegal but tax avoidance is not. Many of the top footballers in the UK are paid in a very creative way so that they don't pay the full whack of income tax. If this is wrong, then how do we fix it? So, either take the "Phoenix 4+1" to a court of law and prove their "guilt" or JUST SHUT UP. And, PESTon, find some other story to cover.
This Photo Appeared in Glamour Magazine in the US 5:02pm on 06 Sep 2009 #55 & others who share the same view, I have been telling everyone for at least 3 years that the BBC is NOTHING but a broadcast version of the tabloids. They are in fact competing with The Sun, Daily Mirror maybe even Daily Sport. I used to get upset about it. But now all I want is for the Licence fee to be abolished. Once that is done, the BBC should be free to cover any topic in anyway. I'm just sitting and waiting that it will be soon.
And just to add an item to your list: Can we compare the way the BBC covered the "historic" US elections of 2008 to the "even more historic" Japanese elections of last week? We had weeks & days of "Obama-mania" in 2008. But unless I watched or read elsewhere, I have no idea who the new PM of Japan is or his cabinet and what the policies of the DPJ (party who won) are?
Aussie sports fan take realistic view 09:25am on 21 Jul 2009 I think the fact that Australia were the better team in Cardiff and lost the toss AGAIN at Lord's is what convinces 3rd party observer fans such as me to conclude that England won't win this series. There are still 3 tests to go and none are at Lord's again. I know Ponting has his critics and not everyone thinks he's up to scratch. But you only have to look at Andrew Strauss and you just know that you're better off in every way with Ricky.
Is economics a busted flush? 7:18pm on 17 Jul 2009 I don't think economic theory is itself busted. After all, how did the theory come about? It was formulated based on observed behaviour. When studying opportunity cost, it was common to use butter and guns as the 2 opposing products? Similarly, in macro-economics, the multiplier effect and balanced, deficit and surplus budgets and central bank functions are taught because these were tried and tested. The reason why we have economic problems is because a small number of people decided to bin all these theories. And I don't mean just the bankers. I just think we need to get back to basics and follow what the theory says. If we follow the theory, then at least more people understand it and can tell if it will work. It will be interesting to see how quantitative easing works or not in the next few months or years.

Mr. Easton made a comment about the media coverage of the crime stats. All I did was respond to his comments. Either explain why the post has been referred or post it. Or if you are censoring comments that criticise the BBC, then say so.

Do you have some kind of "death wish"? Unemployment is now nearly 3 million. Do you want to join us? Some of us, well, at least I have been lamenting the state of journalism in this country for many years. Everyday all kinds of statistics are released. But it is always the media and especially the TV tax-funded BBC that hypes 1 or 2 aspects of these statistics. Why? Simply because that's what the media in this country do. I can understand the newspapers doing it - they need to sell their papers to survive. But why does the BBC which is assured of inflation-busting TV tax increases indulge in this? Why does J.Paxman ask the same question 14 times? Why does R.Peston get accused of causing the Northern Rock run? Why does F.Walsh talk about swine flu when Mexico has already said that the death rates from swine flu are similar to seasonal flu death rates? It is all because that's what the BBC do. The alternative would be to not talk about it. So, here is a simple challenge for you. Don't start another blog topic for a month. Are you up for it?
What are the chances of dying from swine flu? 4:26pm on 15 Jul 2009 Isn't it strange how every "crisis" creates another "hero journalist". We had Peston on banks, Flanders on economy and now we have Walsh on swine flu. Can you please stop this reporting? There is no swine flu pandemic. It's just flu with a fancy name. Have you ever tracked normal flu...the one with no fancy name. In the UK, for some reason, there is a flu outbreak in November/December every year. Will you be able to split swine flu and "ordinary" flu at that time?
