FA avoids major doping row 6:12pm on 11 Jul 2009 I don't see why football should have to enforce these drug test rules. It will always be the usual sports who have drug problems, becuas there is no skill element in these sports: athletics, swimming, cycling and weightlifting. I suppose it would be un-PC to only target these sports, so everyone else has to suffer. As for Paddy Kenny, I didn't realise lard was a banned substance.

I was born in the 70's so by the time I started walking and talking (sometime around 1982) I was supporting United and at that time we were winning nowt but people still hated us with a passion. Why is that?

I'm not Robbo's age, but I started watching footie in the late 70's and Nottingham Forest and Liverpool were the best teams in Europe, never mind England, yet there was this mid-table tripe who kept saying they were the 'biggest club in the world'. I've disliked them since then, but it is true that the biggest clubs have the biggest t**ts for fans. Most people on benefits support Man U. Probably.

I heard from someone older than me however, that Man U fans were the worst for hooliganism in the 60s, and that is why people don't like them. We associate Millwall and Leeds with that sort of thing but apparently Utd were the original and worst, and many of the worst yobs were cockneys, just as many of their fans now are.

We would be cutting off our nose to spite our face, unless, of course, it was a Europe-wide cap. Of course, the Americans are merely competing amongst themselves, so they haven't got this problem.

Another thing that would be anathema to football fans is the fact that, as you point out, Arizona is the third home of the Cardinals. Imagine Man United moving to London. Mind you, they'd be nearer their fans...
Should there be a winter break? 12:54pm on 08 Jan 2009 I don't think a weather-based mid-season break is a good idea in this country. We have not had a cold snap for a few years in this country, and if some are to be believed we will have a Mediterranean climate before long. Cold snaps are not guaranteed to be the first week in January either. In Britain, they can be in April. Next year and the year after, we will probably have mild winters and we won't be having this debate.

I also don't think it is wise for lower-division clubs to have undersoil heating. I read on this website of a Scottish club using 4000 litres of oil to power their system in the days leading up to a game, and it still got cancelled. That must have cost a colossal amount of money. I believe you are not allowed to have the heating on while a match is in progress. I could be wrong but if this is the case, and the temperature during a game is below freezing, it would defeat the object somewhat, as the game would probably be abandoned. My team have covers that work to -5C. That should cover most eventualities.
FA Cup never loses magic 4:06pm on 05 Jan 2009 The FA Cup is still magical. It has lost some of its lustre, but so has all football. The problems of staggered kick-offs, domination of bigger clubs, weakened teams, affect all football. High ticket prices for PL games also affect attendances where fans have to stump up extra for cup ties. There are some people who would denigrate the cup because they have a vested interest in the PL or the CL. That is up to them, it is only a small number in total, most are not English and some are not even football fans at all, they're just in it for the money. Or those glory-chasing idiots who think supporting a big club impresses people. Of course, there is no romance for big clubs, because they are just there to be shot at, humiliated like Liverpool and Chelsea last season. There is plenty of romance left in the Cup; we had a record number of non-leaguers reach the third round this year. Torquay and Kettering through to Round 4, and I am sure that Aston Villa will be looking for revenge for their League Cup drubbing if Donny come through their tie with Cheltenham.

Big clubs play weakened teams for the simple reason that they know they will probably win regardless of who is in the team. This is true in the PL occasionally. Sometimes Fergie gets it's wrong, as when Man U failed to score against Exeter and Burton. The players who played in those matches have had their careers affected; they proved they weren't good enough. The big four usually win the cup, therefore they must take it seriously, but it was good to see some other teams in the semi-finals last year, and that is not an indication of the Big Four taking the cup lightly. As for Bolton Wanderers, who cares? Their attitude is bizarre in a way, but in another way they are never going to win the FA Cup again, and they probably will not make any sort of money that will affect their bottom line.

This is where the FA could take some action. The winners of the FA Cup will pocket £3 775 000, plus TV fees gained along the way. If the FA upped the winners prize money to £10m or upwards, that would make PL clubs sit up. For winning six matches, that's not a bad return.
Ince demise highlights flawed thinking 9:46pm on 16 Dec 2008 I don't see the point of coaching qualifications if you had a long playing career, since the qualifications seem to be experienced based, with a few seminars and an essay or two thrown in. There doesn't seem to be anything that a player cannot learn whilst he is playing, if he has the brains to look at what is going on around him. Southgate has done well at Middlesbrough with no 'experience' and no qualifications, but he clearly paid attention to what was happening around him. If you play for a significant amount of time you have 'done' the course, apart from the seminar and essay bit.

Going on a course will not make you spend wisely in the transfer market, if indeed your chairman would allow it anyway. Of course, on the continent the coach looks after the team and nothing else, whereas here they tend to do everything.
Club ownership: The unsolvable debate 3:03pm on 12 Sep 2008 Given that the worst run club in the Premiership at the moment are Newcastle, who are under English ownership, I'm not sure whether it is a good idea to restrict foreign ownership.

Foreign ownership may mean more foriegn coaches in the Premiership (although Newcastle's next manager may also be foreign), and fewer English players. Those fewer English players are of a higher standard than in previous years, but we can't afford any injuries. Watch Walcott get a cruciate knee ligament injury and not play for England for 2 years. That was McClaren's problem. If Ashley Cole and John Terry are out, the replacements are poor. Most of the top players were fit on Wednesday. How often that will happen in the run up to 2010 remains to be seen.

The worst case scenario of all this foreign ownership is the spectre of a breakaway super league, but again, this was first mooted when all the Big Five (Everton, Spurs, ho, ho) were in English hands. The only time I've heard a mention recently was from the shoe salesman masquerading as Man City Chief Exec, and he's English. He's also got a different boss now. Might have to go back to his shoe shop.

It is a sad fact that Newcastle will probably never win anything ever again, unless they get taken over by Russians or Arabs. They have one of the biggest supports in the country, but the money isn't there in the boardroom (or the competence). However, they've not won owt for 39 years, so what's the difference? Also, if it weren't for Chelsea and Blackburn, Man Utd would have won 12 Premierships instead of 9. So money has made the Premiership more interesting, rather than less. In a few years time we may have Man City and QPR challenging for the title. A genuine four-horse race, when has that ever happened?
Capello may regret Owen exclusion 11:56am on 01 Sep 2008 Can't imagine why Lescott is in there. He's already proved he's not up to it. What happened to Woodgate? Wheater? Heskey's no good without Owen.

Beckham has to be in the squad, because the alternatives have proved they are not good enough. SWP can't cross, and he's a winger? Bentley is the only alternative.

I can't see Bullard playing, and if he doesn't it will be a waste of a pick. Agree that Rooney's done little for England, however we can't afford to not pick him.
Transfer window not working in the Football League? 11:41am on 28 Aug 2008 I think there should be a rule that any player who asks for a transfer after the season has started should be shot!! I can't believe the deliberate attempts by certain players to sabotage an entire season at some clubs.

Also, why does the EU wield so much power in football, when the vast majority of FIFA nations are not part of it? Are there transfer windows in South America? If not, they would still be indirectly affected by our window. Why doesn't Old Septic tell the EU where to go? It's not as if they're going to lock him in a dungeon in Strasbourg if he disobeys them.
